Sessional GP Tutor (SGPT) Scheme

Are you working as a sessional GP and interested in teaching medical students?

Have you had some previous teaching experience and are keen to build on this?

How about doing some extra teaching at a practice where you work through the Sessional GP Tutor Scheme...

Sessional GPs are increasing in number, highly motivated, enthusiastic but often unable to get involved in undergraduate medical education through lack the opportunity or exposure to teaching possibilities.

Practices may want to increase their teaching portfolio but lack the staff capacity.

The SGPT scheme allows Sessional GPs to take on extra teaching in practices where they work.

There are opportunities to teach practice-based modules to students depending on the individual tutor's and practice's circumstances. Please see the details of these modules in year-specific pages. You can indicate your preferred modules and dates by using the teaching preferences form 2022-23.

GP Tutors will need to ensure students are given maximum opportunities for patient contact with support from the practice. Please note that the patient contact could be face-to-face and/or remote depending on COVID distancing.

There are also opportunities to take part in Central or Medical-School Based Teaching.

Tutors have access to the specific module handbooks/sites to guide their teaching including suggestions for learning activities and details of any assessment tasks. Acknowledging that individual practice set-ups are different, we purposely keep suggested activities as flexible as possible to reflect this diversity. Sessional GP tutors will also be invited to attend our CBME tutor training events.
