Translation Criticism - Presentation

Hey there, stranger!

I am Edward Cogley. I was born in Panama, and currently living in Panama Oeste, west side baby!

Graduated from Insituto Fermin Naudeau back in 2016. Bachelor in Science with an emphasis in Technology.
Started college at Universidad Latina de Panama in 2019 and had a hard stop at the very last lap of my degree in 2021 due to COVID-19 and its unforeseen circumstances that prevented me from continuing studying. In addition to that, the challenges that arose at the university's HQ also played a role in forcing me to stop.
Fast forward to 2025; yes, 4 years later, I have the chance of finishing this last lap and here we are!

My interests and hobbies are anime-manga, music and cooking.

I would say I am kind of geeky as I've always been passionate about learning new technologies both software and hardware related, so going through the different classes imparted by Professor Dumolin, from CAT tools to Translation Criticism was a truly rewarding experience and learning adventure.

Regarding the projects I have in mind, I am committed to taking every opportunity that allows me to prepare for the realities of the professional market. During my academic training, many of my professors offered opportunities to work or volunteer as an interpreter at different events. These experiences provided valuable, real-world exposure that no classroom assignment could truly replicate. They also helped me understand whether interpretation was a path I genuinely wanted to pursue, allowing me to assess both my interest and my ability in that field.

In addition, I have been planning to take several courses related to technology and management. Given my strong interest in technology, I believe these skills are essential—especially since some of the positions I’ve aspired to for years require familiarity with specific apps and tools. Management skills are equally important, as they are fundamental in almost any professional environment.

Overall, my projects revolve around continuing to study and prepare as thoroughly as possible for my future. I aim to take advantage of all the learning experiences available to me so I can determine whether they align with my goals and make informed decisions about the direction I want to pursue.

Why i chose this carrer

I have always loved learning English since I was a child. In fact, my earliest motivation to understand the language came from wanting to play videogames—back then, there were no Spanish-dubbed versions like there are today, and it was incredibly frustrating not to understand what was happening. That desire to fully experience the games I loved pushed me to start learning English long before I realized it would become part of my professional future.

Once I chose this field as my career path, I became even more immersed in it thanks to the teachers I encountered along the way. Their guidance made me realize how much I still had to learn—especially in grammar and conversation. I never would have guessed just how much of a beginner I truly was until their instruction helped me see my gaps and start improving them.

PATH FORWARD

As of now, one of the opportunities within my reach is to take a course related to technology, especially since my current workplace is offering access to these programs through its partnerships with educational institutions. It seems like the perfect moment to take advantage of these openings.

Additionally, now that I am at the cusp of my career, I am seriously considering pursuing a master’s degree that aligns with my long-term professional goals. I want to continue strengthening my skills and ensuring that the path I follow contributes meaningfully to the future I envision for myself.

🪐How do i feel about this class?🪐

Now that I have completed the course, I can clearly see how essential the criticism component is to our profession and why it was placed at the very end of the program. In hindsight, its position makes perfect sense: after ten quarters of study, we finally had the academic foundation and practical experience needed to fully understand and apply the concepts introduced in Translation Criticism. Its impact is much greater than I initially expected. Although I'd rather have this class to be imparted from the beginning or repeated in different quarters to fully master what we are aiming to be, great analytical translators.

Finishing the course has shown me just how much I’ve grown over the past two and a half years. I can now confidently apply the techniques I learned across different courses and accurately identify them in real texts. This clarity is largely thanks to the dedication of our professor, who understood the gaps we had in distinguishing these techniques and guided us patiently throughout the process. His approach allowed us to connect all the pieces and truly appreciate how translation criticism supports our development as professionals.
