Ne me quitte pas
Il faut oublier
Tout peut s'oublier
Qui s'enfuit déjà
Oublier le temps
Des malentendus
Et le temps perdu
À savoir comment
Oublier ces heures
Qui tuaient parfois
À coups de pourquoi
Le coeur du bonheur
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Moi, je t'offrirai
Des perles de pluie
Venues de pays
Où il ne pleut pas
Je creuserai la terre
Jusqu'après ma mort
Pour couvrir ton corps
D'or et de lumière
Je ferai un domaine
Où l'amour sera roi
Où l'amour sera loi
Où tu seras reine
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Je t'inventerai
Des mots insensés
Que tu comprendras
Je te parlerai
De ces amants-là
Qui ont vu deux fois
Leurs couurs s'embraser
Je te raconterai
L'histoire de ce roi
Mort de n'avoir pas
Pu te rencontrer
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
On a vu souvent
Rejaillir le feu
De l'ancien volcan
Qu'on croyait trop vieux
Il est, paraît-il
Des terres brûlées
Donnant plus de blé
Qu'un meilleur avril
Et quand vient le soir
Pour qu'un ciel flamboie
Le rouge et le noir
Ne s'épousent-ils pas?
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Je ne vais plus pleurer
Je ne vais plus parler
Je me cacherai là
À te regarder
Danser et sourire
Et à t'écouter
Chanter et puis rire
Laisse-moi devenir
L'ombre de ton ombre
L'ombre de ta main
L'ombre de ton chien
Mais
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away on this summer day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in a summer sky
When our love was new and our hearts were high
When the day was young and the night was long
And the moon stood still for the nightbird's song
If you go away
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away
Ne me quitte pas
But if you stay I'll make you a day like no day has been or will be again
We'll sail on the sun
We'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees
And worship the wind
Then if you go I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand
If you go away
If you go away
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away
If you go away as I know you will
You must tell the world to stop turning till
You return again, if you ever do
For what good is love without loving you
Can I tell you now as you turn to go
I'll be dying slowly 'til your next hello
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away
If you go away
But if you stay I'll make you a night like no night has been or will be again
I'll sail on your smile
I'll ride on your touch
I'll talk to your eyes
That I love so much
Then if you go I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to hold up my hand
If you go away
If you go away
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away
If you go away as I know you must
There'll be nothing left in this world to trust
Just an empty room full of empty space
Like the empty look I see on your face
I'd have been the shadow of your dog
If I thought it'd have kept me by your side
If you go away
Ne me quitte pas
If you go away
Please, don't go away
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Yo seré tu rey, si estás junto a mí
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
No sé si quizás te podrá extrañar
Ne me quitte pas
No me dejes, no
No, ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
No quiero llorar, no puedo ni hablar
Yo me esconderé y te miraré
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
Ne me quitte pas
The English adaptation changes imagery and tone: while the French original emphasises pleading (“don’t leave me”), the English version emphasises conditional love (“if you go away”) and negotiating the departure.
The Spanish adaptation again shifts nuance: it expresses a romantic plea similar to the original, but with culturally resonant expressions and simplified metaphor. Although it carries the French expression "Ne me quitte pas" more than the English adaptation.
Therefore, the adaptations do not fully preserve all the metaphorical richness and emotional tone of the original; each version adapts the message to fit the linguistic, cultural, and musical norms of the target language
The core theme (fear of abandonment and love’s plea) remains intact across versions, but the way of expression and depth of metaphor are different in each language.
The value of studying these versions lies in how translation/adaptation involves a transformation, especially in songs, where rhyme, meter, and melody restrict literal translation.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
La están perdiendo y encima te culpan;
O detestado, no terminas odiando,
Y tampoco te jactas de ser bueno o sabio;
Si puedes soñar sin que tus sueños te dominen;
Pensar, sin hacer del pensamiento tu objetivo,
Si encontrando el Triunfo y el Fracaso
Tratas ambos impostores por igual;
Y con herramientas viejas la vuelves a armar;
Sin de tu pérdida murmurar un pero;
Y no obstante, sigues prendido, aun vacío,
O caminas con reyes, conservando lo común;
Y puedes brindarte a todos pero a nadie demasiado;
Sans un geste et sans un soupir ;
Pourtant lutter et te défendre ;
Si tu peux supporter d'entendre tes paroles
Sans mentir toi-même d'un seul mot ;
Sans qu'aucun d'eux soit tout pour toi ;
Si tu sais méditer, observer et connaître
Sans jamais devenir sceptique ou destructeur ;
Penser sans n'être qu'un penseur ;
Si tu peux être brave et jamais imprudent ;
Si tu sais être bon, si tu sais être sage
Sans être moral ni pédant ;
The Spanish version by Rafael Squirru is a translation, not an adaptation. It seeks to maintain the poem’s structure, tone, and moral message. Still, it uses culturally resonant phrasing—such as “serás un hombre, mi pichón”—that softens the ending and adds emotional warmth absent from the more stoic English original.
The French version Si tu peux… by André Maurois takes more freedom. It reorganizes some ideas, introduces new images, and shifts certain nuances—for example, it emphasizes tenderness (“sans cesser d'être tendre”). The tone becomes more introspective and philosophical.
While both translations preserve the overall theme of personal strength, integrity, and self-discipline, they differ in the way they portray their feelings:
— The Spanish translation highlights perseverance and warmth, making the parental voice more affectionate and culturally familiar.
— The French version elevates poetic elegance.
As a result, translations of If— are not strictly equivalent but reflect interpretations of Kipling’s message rather than exact replicas of it.
