There will be catering, nearest the pin prizes and generally one of our biggest and best events of the season. If you can't find a partner, you can join another BU player, but you can't win the trophy!

Sucess in Cumbrae

The annual trip to visit Great Cumbrae off the west coast saw the BU team defeated by local Millport Golf club on Friday 14th July. That didn't stop Sanjoy Das finishing a fantastic 2nd place in the Millport Open on the Saturday morning however. Rumour is he was buying everyone drinks on Friday night... Well done Sanjoy!

Ye Monks

The first round of the Ye Monks competition takes place this coming Saturday. For newer members, or those that need a reminder, it's your best 2 net scores out of the first 4 rounds that you carry into the final round. The final, traditionally, sees the top 8 go out in the last two groups to put a bit of pressure on for the title with your final round adding to your best 2. It's one of the hardest competitions to win so good luck!

Harrison Open

The Harrison Open takes place on Saturday 19th August. Entries for this event must be sent to the Harrison Golf Club directly and an entry form is attached with all the instructions, You can enter via email to the club, providing you pay your entry fee via bank transfer. Entry is £15 and there are some sizeable prizes. There will be no club golf at the Braids on that day but there may be a BU outing for those that want a week off the hill - watch this space.

Braids United - BHA Special Report

BHA Championship Special

On Saturday 8th July, the BHA Championships were staged at the Braid Hills and the threat of torrential downpours didn't stop 47 players taking to the hill to compete against the other clubs.

The rain did hold off long enough to get everyone round, but despite the favourable wind and sunny weather, a lot of players struggled with over a 1/3rd of the field failing to return a score.

The BU were prominent in some of the prizes, winning all four nearest the pins, and getting two of the seven 2s scored on the day.

In the Seniors section our very own Captain Douglas Aitken triumphed with a solid if not spectacular 85 less 14 for a net 71.

In the Handicap section, Ross Dewar posted his joint best round at the Braids with a second 82 in the last few weeks, less 15 for a 67 to finish 2nd, but the comfortable winner was our own Alison Maillardet-O'Neill with an impressive 80 less 15 for a 65. Some handicap cuts coming for both of them today! Well done to all three players for making the prizes.

FIve BU players take part in the knockouts next week and the full draw for that is attached as well as the complete results. Well done to all the BU winners.

REMINDER

Please sign up for a tee-time AT LEAST 2 weeks in advance on the Scottish Golf App. Currently only 10 signed up for the 22nd July and 3 signed up for the 29th July. I've already submitted the entry for 22nd July. so you are already a late sign up for this event if you are plannign to play. Tee sheets open 4 weeks ahead of time.

The Sandy Rennie Draw is attached, with one half of the draw racing along now at the semi-final stage. The other side has a couple of matches in round 3 to be completed this week.

There is an additonal fixture on the list, with the Mixed Foursomes event on Friday 4th August over the 18 holes of the Braids. It's a stableford event, with the top pair being eligible to enter the Scottish Mixed Foursomes at Crail. If you are interested in playing, contact Vice-Captain Chris Donkin who will pair you up. Both players must be members of Braids United.

Ghost/Extra Scorecards: If a player has one of these sitting on their app, they should now have the option to delete it. Just go to Scorecards, swipe the offending card to the left, and it will ask for a reason you are deleting. Pop something in, and hopefully, it should remove it from the system.

Reminder: Make sure you create your card on the app before going out to play in a competition, even if you are scoring on paper. That way you can enter and save the score when you come in on your app, or on the ipad in the clubhouse.

Brutal conditions with consistent 35-45mph winds made for tough golf and meant half the field failed to get the ball round safely. It was reflected in the scoring as well, with a net 73 winning a medal for the first time in a long time. Three players skillfully (or miraculously) bagged a 2 - well done to Alan Hay, Jim Fish and Stevie Pennel.

Club Championship Winners and report

This year's champions were decided on Saturday 23rd June on a gloriously sunny day on the Braids, with a large number of members turning out to support the players.

In the C Championship, Mark Munro got off to a fast start against Jordan Shirley, going 3 up early on, and while they exchanged some holes thereafter, Mark's fear of being watched by a crowd led to him running out a 5&4 victor before anyone saw any of their golf! Well done Mark on your 2nd title.

In the B Championship, Derek Brown took on Simon Manson, both in their first final. Some wayward tee-shots from our resident big-hitter allowed Derek to take an early lead. Simon's power came to the fore on the 10th and 11th as he fought back, and an engaging contest made it right through to the 16th where the crowd withnessed the concession from Derek, SImon winning his first B title 3&2 - Definitely targetting the A's next year! Congratulations to Simon.

In the Club Championship Final, defending champion Gordon Brown had made it in to yet another final (his 12th in all we think!), courtesy of a 50ft birdie putt on the 20th hole in his semi-final on Thursday. He took on Craig Howieson, appearing in his first final, who himself had won both his matches on the 18th earlier in the week. Craig had brought some supporters out with him who walked round, including past captain and Dad Stirling Howieson - althought whether he was more of a help or a hinderance we wiil never know!

Both players would probably admit to some nerves as neither was displaying their best golf, but that made for an intriguing contest which went all the way to the 18th. Craig did have a chance to rap it up on 17, but couldnt make it down in two from the right side of the green. When Gordon put his ball in the bushes on the 18th tee, Craig held his nerve to pop one up the middle of the fairway, and barring any disasters, the title was his. Although he missed the green with his second, he had shots in hand, and calmly rolled his 4th towards the hole prompting the concession from the defending champ. Well done to Craig on his first club championship.

Attached are a picture of the winners.

Saturday 23rd June - Texas Scramble

It ended up being teams of 3 on the day as there were some withdrawals but that made for a slightly quicker afternoon. The afternoon teams could do nothing about the score from the monring team of Steven Pennel, Daniel Sim and Les Cranston who shot a scratch 63 less 8 for a nett 55. Well done to them,

Sunday 24th June - Sivewright Trophy Round 2

The Ye Monks of Ye Braids A team took on Mount Vernon A in the Sivewright trophy. It began raining on the 5th hole and only went off on the 18th, so all players were very wet by the end, but none-the-less the Ye Monks team of Andrew Chalmers, Neil Porter, Roger Lockhart and Simon Manson managed to win 2up and progress to the next round.

 Texas Scramble Rules and Teams

Tee-times as below

Team 1 - 7am - Les Cranston, Daniel Sim, Ian Walker, Stevie Pennel

Team 2- 11:40am - Alan Mcintosh, Jim Fish, Chris Wixon, Chris Donkin

Team 3 - 11:50am - Alan Hay, David Paton, Wilf Mitchell, Jim Monan

Team 4 - 12:00pm - Andy White, Walter Grieve, Neil Burgoyne, Paul Campbell

Team 5 - 12:10pm - Glenn Marsters, Douglas Aitken, Graeme Thomson, Liam Baird (new member)

Reserve: Neil Porter

If 3 more players wish to play, they will form a 6th team along with myself, otherwise will be reserves. There will not be mixed 3 and 4 person teams - in case of any drop outs or calls offs I will step in. Thanks.

Rules: All players must have 4 tee shots each with no requirement for a par 3 (it's a friendly scramble)

Choose the tee shot you are using, and mark it within 6 inches. The player who's tee shot is chosen plays first. If the ball was in the fairway, each player in the group can place the ball within 6 inches of the marker. If anywhere else on the course, the ball must be dropped and then played as it lies, no nearer the hole. Balls on the green must be played from the same spot

If a player holes out, that ball is the team score - i.e. if you have a tap in for a par and your teamates haven't had their biride attempt yet, don't just knock it in, otherwise that's a par on the card!

Club and Council News

New Sign-up process

Please now sign up for Saturday golf 2-4 weeks ahead of time by booking a tee time on the Scottish Golf App and the club will book your tee time with Edinburgh Leisure for you. It's a one-step process instead of the old 3-steps so it's much easier. Saturdays over summer are quite busy with the other clubs and members of the public, so sign up early to avoid missing out.

Ladies Tee Change

Following feedback from our members, the council have decided to move the ladies tees on Saturday games to the red tees. This is in line with the majority of other clubs mixed competittions and will hopefully encourage greater numbers of our female members to partake.

Club Championship Knockouts

If you are not playing in the final round of the qualifiers next week, but have two scores in already and are in the top 8 in your section, please let the Secretary know if you can make the knockouts the following week by replying to this email. The default days are Tuesday 20th in the evening, Thursday 22nd in the evening and the finals on Saturday 24th in the afternoon from 1pm. You MUST be available at those times, but can arrange with your opponent to play earlier by mutual agreement.

Tuesday Sweeps

The council have noted that the sweep pots on Tuesday nights are considerably smaller than the number of entrants to the competiton. While the sweep is not compulsory, it is assumed you are in it unless you opt-out in advance. Please ensure you make this clear to your playing partners before teeing off, otherwise, even if you have a bad round, you should be contributing your £3 and leaving it in the clubhouse. This will avoid accusations of only putting it in when you score well. Thank you.

8/6/2023

Please Read! Definitive, simplified booking for Saturday golf and simplified scoring.

Dear members,

There have been a number of communications around tee booking in the past week and the past months with many changes. The committee met tonight to decide on the best way forward and have come up with the following solution, with support from Edinburgh Leisure effectively giving us our "block booking" in all but name.

Event Sign Up

Please carry out the following steps to play in any Braids United competition on a SATURDAY only;

1) Sign up at least 14 days in advance by booking a TEE TIME on the SCOTTISH GOLF APP. - Tee times on the app will now reflect the Edinburgh Leisure booking sheet. The secretary will pass this list to Edinburgh Leisure, who will book a time on your behalf.

That's it.

No need to sign up to the event on the Scottish Golf App - these will no longer appear.

No need to book a time with Edinburgh Leisure on Thursdays at 8pm when it opens 8 days before.

The club secretary will estimate for 1 or 2 extra times if some players are expected to sign up late for larger events (i.e. club champs), but be warned, you may not get a tee time if you leave it too late - ESPECIALLY for early morning players. Sign up on the Scottish Golf app 14 days in advance and you are guaranteed a tee time. Don't worry, there will be no fines or missed bookings as this will all be managed by the club and by the starters at Edinburgh Leisure and if you have to pull out the day before that's not a problem.

All club fixtures can be found on the club website here - https://www.braids-united.co.uk/content/loadFixtureList.do

They will also be sent out in the weekly newsletter every single week to remind you what is coming up. Take the newsletter as a prompt to sign up for 2, 3 or even 4 weeks ahead!

This only applies to Saturday golf. For Tuesdays, you still need to book on the app and with Edinburgh Leisure.

Scoring

The club will no longer create cards in advance, or ask you to create them for that specific comp. Instead, just create a normal general play score on the app, and it will be added to the competition at the conclusion of the days play. Easy. For those who wish to use a paper card, remember to create your card before you tee off so you can complete on the ipad when you get in. You can create the card on the ipad before you go out if you don't like using the app.

Thank you and I hope this makes life a bit easier for everyone.

Best

Neil Porter

Honorary Secretary

Braids United Golf Club

On Behalf of the Committee

I hope this helps simplify things.

3/6/2023

The current Braids United Saturday system is not working...

Dear all,

Apparently we were 20 minutes behind getting off today. First I've heard of it.

I'm sending this to all members because I'm fed up of players signing up last minute and causing a headache for the starters etc.

Yes it's frustrating that Edinburgh Leisure don't give us our times, but I asked members to enter events or book a tee time in advance on the Scottish golf app previously and hardly anyone did. Comps are open a month before as is the tee sheet.

We need to start taking some responsibility and EL have offered a solution to avoid random players being booked in with us.

Please take this as a kick up the arse to sign up in advance for events and I can submit the list to the starter 2 weeks before. I.e. SIGN UP NOW for the 17th June qualifier.

Neil,

An exasperated Secretary

Braids United Weekly Update

Welcome to the Issue 17 of the weekly Braids United Email.

Please sign up in advance for Saturday Fixtures on the Scottish Golf App. Tee sheets are open a month in advance. The club can then book your time with Edinburgh Leisure for you. Thank you

Lots of results attached this week, including some season long competition current standings.

Club and Council News

Edinburgh Leisure booking: The secretary circulated an email received from the starter at Edinburgh leisure detailing frustration at Braids United players booking all over the place and expecting to go off with the rest of the club. I can't confirm the accuracy of this, as I don't have the tee sheet, however, I know for a fact many players signed up well outside the usual club times.

From today, you MUST sign up at least 2 weeks in advance on the Scottish Golf App tee sheet - This will allow the club to book times with Edinburgh Leisure in advance, on your behalf in a block.

If you have to call off, you can still cancel your own time, and if you are signing up last minute, that's fine too if your plans change, but there isn't much excuse for the majority of members knowing what they are doing in 2 weeks time.

Thank you for your co-operation with this initiative which will smooth relations with the starters.

Council Meeting this week, so any items for the agenda can be passed on by replying to this email.

Saturday 3 June - Avoiding Slow Play

On Behalf of the Committee

Dear members, with a large field set to play in the afternoon and all groups likely to be four balls the committee would like to remind everyone about their responsibility to avoid slow play. Please be considerate of your fellow members, the wider playing public and those on post golf rota by maintaining a good pace of play at all times, which in short means keeping up with the group ahead and letting the group behind through if you are holding up the course. A reminder of a club rule introduced a few years ago that the group behind holds the right to request to play through a group that is holding them up if they have lost more than a hole on the group ahead.

Remember this doesn't mean rush your golf shots, just be mindful of the many small things that every player needs to do over the course of a round to keep the collective group moving. Play well everyone and enjoy your round.

Scottish Golf App Update: Please if you haven't done so already, download the latest update for the Scottish Golf App. It was released on 7th May. Just remember, book your tee time with Edinburgh Leisure, choose a tee time on the app, then enter the relevant event (and it will automatically pick up your tee time.)

Braids United Weekly Update

Welcome to the Issue 14 of the weekly Braids United Email.

Club champs info below. Please take note.

Summer Eclectics Launched. Action required if you want to take part.

Club and Council News

Club Championship Handicap Bands:  With the switch to the World Handicap System and the move to handicap index, the council have simplified the banding for the A, B and C sectiions as follows:

A: 0 to 10.0 index

B: 10.1 to 18.0

C: 18.1 +

The top 8 scratch scores qualify for the A regardless of the band you are in. If you are 10.0 or below you can only qualify for the A, 10.1-18 the A or the B, and 18.1+ the A or the C only. Top 8 in bands B and C will qualify for the knockouts. As a reminder, it's 2 of your best 3 scores and you must be free to play on the default knock out days the week after the final qualifier.

Thanks from the Captain: At the recent council meeting, the Captain wanted to pass on his thanks to all members on the club rota system. This had been well observed by all members on the rota and everyone has really leaned into the ethos of what being part of Braids United is all about. Thank you.

The minutes of the March council meeting are now on the website.

Yellow Tee Comps: The council recently agreed to have some competitions as Yellow Tees for this season on a trial basis. This is partly to try and have speedier rounds, partly for our higher handicap members to have more opportunity to join in and partly for a bit of variety. The designated competitions are: The Leith Links (tuesday nights), The RNLI Medal, the David Ramsay Stableford and the Bogey Competition. We will review this at the AGM in December.

Summer Eclectic: The council have been slightly late in organising this event, but we plan to run two separate eclectics this year. One will be all white tee comps on Saturdays and one for Tuesday night Leith Links. All players will be able to see their eclectic scratch score online and periodically, the secretary will publish a handicap version via the newsletter. Results: The latest results sheet from the RNLI Medal and the Spring Outing to Leven among others are attached as a PDF and we will attach all the past weeks results going forward in this manner. Full results are available on the club page on the Scottish Golf Website here - Braids United Events Page

Sign-up for events/tee-times: Just a reminder, can all players please 1) Book a tee time via the Scottish Golf App and 2) Enter each event via the Scottish Golf App. Some players are doing 1 and not 2 and vice-versa, and some doing neither. This helps us know who is playing each week and when. Tee sheets are open 28 days in advance, so sign up early! Thank you.

Booking with Edinburgh Leisure: We can now book as a club member, 2 weeks ahead of time, in person with the starter. If players get in to the habit of booking on the Scottish Golf App, the club can hand in a list, and book you an equivalent tee time 2 weeks ahead! Other clubs are using this service successfully and if you have to call off a week later, no problem! Please try to sign up early via the app the council will take care of the rest (applies to Saturdays only)

Sivewright Trophy - Players wanted! -  Some newer members might not be aware, but there is a society within the club called Ye Monks of Ye Braids which enters two teams in the Lothians Golf Association Sivewright Trophy. We are looking for two squads of players, ideally 12 in total who meet the following criteria - Male, handicap index between 5.5 and 18.4 and available to play matches once a month from now until September. Reply to this email if you interested in being considered. It's a foursomes format, so you need to be comfortable playing alternate shot golf. Deadline 6th May for names.

Friday 28th April - Scottish Medals Finals, Duddingston - Glenn Marsters, Neil Porter and Les Cranston represented the club at this event, and all were not very good. Neil the best with the 17th Place finish, with top 6 making the final at Panmure. Better luck next year.

2nd Place - Simon Manson/ Stuart Kennedy - 65 less 6 for a nett 59

3rd Place - Stevie Pennel/ George Ackroyd - 65 less 3 for a nett 62

A superb early morning display from Mark and Fraser saw them run away with the sweep, but the first victim of not paying your fees goes to Fraser who isn't eligible for the trophy. That goes to Simon and Stuart. Well done to all 3 pairs for impressive scoring and commisserations to WIlf and Sandy who also had a nett 62 but a worse back 9. The rest of the field was at least 4 shots back.

Scottish Golf App Update

Tee times - After much testing, the easiest way to add yourself to the tee sheet in the app, is to go in under "Tee Booking", choose the day you are booking for, and pick a slot. The actual time on a Saturday, as always, will be randomly allocated as your arrive at the club. Once you have your tee time, enter the event on the app and it will automatically pick up your tee booking.

Scorecards for Competition - To create your own competition scorecard, click on "Bookings" on the home screen, select the appropriate event you have entered, then select "Create Scorecard" from the box that pops up. Don't create the scorecard from the "Scorecards" tab. This should be done only for general play scores.

The secretary is away next week, so assistance will be limited with scoring for those playing. Please create cards as above, and results can be found on the scottish golf website here after scores have been entered - Braids United Scottish Golf Page

9/4/2023 Weekly mail follow up

I forgot to include two things in the weekly email

1) please save this webpage as a favourite. https://www.scottishgolf.org/Club%20News%20and%20Results?clubid=2088

It's the results page for the club and updates live each week as scores are recorded, handy for the early players wanting to check their position. Again, hopefully this comes on the app in due course.

2) Winter Foursomes - Congrats to Chris Wixon and Alex Campbell who beat David Paton and Alan McIntosh in the final midweek, winning 1 up.

Best

Club and Council News

Spring Outing Deadline - Sign up by close of play next Saturday 15th April to be considered for the outing to Leven on Sunday 30th. Or just reply to this email and I will add your name to the list. Still places available.

Two-person Scramble next Saturday - In case you missed it last week, if you know your partner, send me a message or email to let me know who it is and I will pair you up! Guests are welcome to take part in this event if you wish. Random pairiings alloated on the day to those without a partner.

Scottish Pairs 9 hole stableford - This event takes place over the Wee Braids on Tuesday 18th April - again, pairs to me please if you know who your partner is. I can pair you up if not. Tee times from around 5:20pm onwards on the Tuesday, please book a time and sign up on the app - pairs must not play in the same group. Winners go through to the national final at Dundas Parks Golf Club - you MUST be free to play on Friday 9th June. If not, your place can be offered to the next eligible player, so let the Secretary know on the night. The top 3 pairs at Dundas go to the UK final at this year's Open venue, Royal Liverpool.

Dawn Patrol Whatsapp Group - A new whatsapp group has been created for those members who play with the group at 7am or just before. If you want added to the group, please let the Secretary know, even if you might only occasionally play at this time. This will allow easy organisation of players so you know you won't be on your own. Hopefully a temporary measure while we sort out the app.

Latest Results

Back to last Sunday firstly, and a first match of the new season against Heriots FP Golf Society resulted in a narrow 3-2 win for the BU. Hospitality at Gullane, as always, was excellent.

Thursday night saw the first of the monthly 9 hole social games on the Wee Braids, and 12 players took part. Ross Mclean, one of our newest members took the purple golf ball on offer, and all enjoyed the Soup and Scones afterwards in the clubhouse. Thanks to Vice-Captain Chris and his wife Anne for catering.

Saturday 9th April - Heriots Trophy (Spring Meeting)

1st Place - Andrew Chalmers - 81-13 = 68

2nd Place - Martin Rutherford - 76-7 = 69

3rd Place - Alan McIntosh - 75-6 = 69

Finally on Sunday, the BU took part in what is possibly a first match v the Edinburgh Western Golf Club, our downstairs neighbours, in the first half of a double header. The match was 5 matchplay ties, with every hole counting to the overall score similar to the Dispatch Trophy. In the end, the Western take a narrow 8-7 lead into the 2nd half in September.

Thanks go to the Sanjoy Das, Shirley Matheison, the Captain's wife and the Vice Captain Chris Donkin for providing some of the food, and organiser Graeme Blackwood for doing a big shift in the kitchen as well as getting the teams together, sorting out the prizes, and generally being a good Egg (see what I did there?). Another excellent event hosted by the BU.

Club and Council News

The draw for the Sandy Rennie Trophy is attached to this newsletter. There have been a fantastic 49 entries, meaning 17 first round ties and 15 second round ties have been drawn, with one player awaiting the winner of a first round. The deadline for each round is the end of the next 6 months. The rules of the competition are also attached. Two Golden rules: 1) Don't wait until the deadline, arrange your ties NOW! 2) You can not play this competition at the same time as another competition - it's against the rules of golf unless in exceptional circumstances. It's also a club major, so should be treated as such. Other than that, good luck to all players. Results to the vice-captain as per attached rules sheet. (p.s. anyone that hasn't paid their membership fees before playing their first round will be DQ'ed from the competition - you have been warned!)

Spring Outing - There is a sign up sheet in clubhouse for the outing on Sunday 30th April at Leven Golf Club. Tee times from 12pm. £60 cost including food and golf. The club will arrange prizes for the day. If you aren't up at the club, names to myself or Mark Robertson and we will add you. If oversubscribed we will try to get extra times, and then draw a ballot of names. Sign up by 15th April.

New Tee rules for High Handicappers - The council realise that for some higher handicappers, the White tees are quite daunting at the Braids and have decided for this season to allow any player who has a course handicap of 36 or above from the White Tees, to choose to "tee-it-forward" and play off the Yellows or Reds.  For Ladies, this is an index of 30.4 or higher and for Gents this is an index of 34.1 or higher. This will only apply to competitions off the White Tees and is that players choice.

Alongside this, a number of other comps outside of the medals/majors will be considered for play off the yellow or even red tees for a bit of variety.

Finally, good luck to both teams representing the club the next two Sundays. Firstly v Heriots FP's at Gullane on the 2nd and then at home to the Western GC on the 9th. Results next Sunday night for both will be reported here.

Saturday 25th March - Winter League

1st Place - Ian Meyer - 39 points

2nd Place - Dougie Aitken - 38 points

One player had two of the magic 2's this week, on the 2nd and the 7th(!) to scoop the 4 week rollover - Well done Glenn Marsters, who also gets special mention for shooting a scratch 72 continuing his good form.

In the Eclectic, the two leaders went out together to put a bit of pressure on, and Neil Porter managed to get a birdie at 14 to tie with Simon Manson on 49 strokes. They split the cash, but the trophy goes to Neil on the better back 9. Glenn Marsters improved by a remarkable 3 shots in the final round to snatch 3rd place on 50.

In the Overall, Glenn Marsters held on to 3rd with 195, Graeme Thomson 2nd on 196 and no surprise with the long time leader never being challenged, Les Cranston on 200, the Winter League Champion.

Latest Results

Saturday 18th March - Winter League

1st Place - Andrew Chalmers - 42 points

2nd Place - Sandy Myles - 40 points

Again, Four players had a single 2 on the card, so the prize pot rolls over to the final week. Any two will win a share unless someone has two of them on their own!

Les Cranston stretched his lead this week for the first time in a little while and now sits on 200 points. Graeme Thomson in 2nd on 196 and Glenn Marsters in 3rd on 195. Looking ominous for anyone else now, and will need a superb round from Graeme or Glenn to catch the long time leader.

In the ecelctic, Neil Porter has finally been pushed in to 2nd place, with Simon Manson improving by 2 shots to sit on 49. Les Crainston imrpoved to 51 to sit in 3rd, meaning this competition goes down to the wire. Have to be something special for anyone outside the top 3 to get a look in.

Dear members,

We have the first leg of our annual home and away friendly match with Heriots at Gullane No.2 on the 2nd of April. Tee times are still TBC. If you'd like to represent the club please let me know by reply email. Cost is also to be confirmed, but in the past its been around £25 for your golf which includes a meal after the game. Format is usually a team of ten, playing match play, it's all a bit of fun and a chance to play a cracking course to boot. We're usually over subscribed for this one, so apologies if you miss out this time.

Best to all,

Ross

Braids Tryst Mashie Trophy

Dear All.

Firstly, sincere condolences to all our English members. LOL!!!

For those fairly new members, the clubhouses is jointly owned by The Western and BU.

The owners are the Braids Tryst.

Your current directors, from the BU, are myself. Martin Rutherford and Scott Neil. We are responsible for keeping the building in good condition.

In all my, long, years, hacking round the course, there has never been a club match between the two clubs.

This has now been instigated and the provisional date is Sunday the 9th April. Tee off times, probably, from around 9.30. To be confirmed.

The scoring will be the accumulation of the match totals.

All matches complete 18 holes. 5&4 plus 2&1. etc

It is hoped that this will be an annual home and away match with the emphasis on social interaction.

With this is mind , all players would be required to participate in the after match catering and bragging rights.[ The usual high standards of the BU will be on offer.]

The Western have confirmed they have a team of ten. This might be expanded if they have greater interest.

Please email me if you would like to be part of this new chapter of the BU story.

PS. Since I am organising it, I will pick myself. Only way to get in a team.

Nobody in their right mind would select me.

Graeme. [ formally, aka Nicola.] New aka to be announced..............soon]

Braids United Weekly Update

Welcome to the Issue 06 of the weekly Braids United Email. Get in touch with the Club Secretary if you want to see any additional content or if you want removed from the list.

Club and Council News

Club Rota -  The Council has once again added any member who has been in the club for over 12 months back on the the club rota (with a few exceptions for those who don't play very often at all). For those newer to the club, you may not be aware, but the food post-golf each week and the organising of the draw pre-golf are all done by volunteer members on a rota system. The more members we have on the list, the less time we need to take a turn at it. I have attached Rota guidelines to this email so you know what is expected when it;s your turn and it's all run through the club website.

You can remove yourself if you really, really don't want to do it, but the club is only as strong as it is because of the input of all it's members making it what it is. If everyone stays on the list, you will get called up twice a year max which is a lot better than someone doing it every month. Please read the attached guidelines so you understand how it all works.

Winter League Sign-up - Just a reminder that the remaining three winter leagues are using sign up.com at the following link - Braids United Sign Up - Please remember to book a time with Edinburgh Lesiure as we don't currently have a club block booking - this will apply to every event unless told otherwise. From the April Medal, we will be using the Scottish Golf App in full, but you can sign up for it now if you like.

Scottish Golf App Update - The Events tab has now appeared on the Scottish Golf App. We will be using this to sign up for our events. Instructions are attached, please use this to sign up for the March Medal. There is no need to choose a tee time at this stage. The app can also be used for scoring for this event - full explanation and demo on the day, and will likely be the first counter of the year with the White tees mostly being back to normal positions at the weekends.

Due to the fact we can't currently allocate/view tee times on the app, the three remaining Winter Leagues will continue to be hosted on signup.com at the following URL: https://signup.com/go/tHsGUAA - Please note early tee times now 7:30am.

We should move fully to the app from 1st April once we have a tee sheet solution in place. The Club is actively engaged with Scottish Golf to resolve this.

Annual Subs - A gentle reminder, these must be paid before the Medal, otherwise you can't win it!

Sandy Rennie Trophy - Entries for the Summer Singles Matchplay event are now being sought. 1/1/2023

Dear members, Happy New Year and wishing everyone the best for 2023!

As mentioned by Chris in his earlier email, the next social event on the calendar is our quiz night taking place at the club on the evening of Friday 20 January. The event will follow a similar format to the quiz nights held in pre covid times, so it's teams of 4 people with £10 entry per team. To encourage members to bring up guests, teams made up of all Braids Utd members will be charged £20 for being lazy (and friendless)! There will be prizes for the top teams on the night with a small donation made to club funds.

Due to the space in the club room we can accommodate up to ten teams, so please email me if you'd like to enter a team. In the event we are over subscribed places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. The quiz master is our very own intellect supreme Alan Hay, so choose your team mates wisely and based on their IQ.

I'll confirm the arrangements in the lead up to the night.

Thanks, Glenn

Golfers,

Scottish Golf Update

The new app isn't expected to launch until the 23rd January - Thankfully for the BU we use our own system at the moment for the Winter League so record your scores in your notes on your phone, or on a paper card (positively antiquated!), and then enter at the end of the round in the clubhouse PC.

In the meantime, sign up sheets have been created for the next 3 Saturdays at signup dot com. - Link here - https://signup.com/go/tHsGUAA - as per Covid times, log in, add your name on the time you have booked with Edinburgh Leisure so we know who is coming and we will mix it up on the day.

29/12/2022 Hind Cup and Currie Bowl

Dear all,

Further to the Captain's last email, an update on the festive competitions and the latest on Scottish Golf registration.

Saturday 31st December - Hind Cup and Winter League

This will now be a double header, off the YELLOW TEES, and stableford. Please bring a prize to win a prize, preferably wrapped. WInner chooses first down to last place who gets what is left! Nearest the pins on the day for those playing at lunchtime, tee times from 11:40 (but we might start early tee time permitting)

Tuesday 3rd January - Currie Bowl

Also off YELLOW TEES and stableford, tee times from 10am. I have two volunteers for food so far, but looking for at least two more for the 16 players signed up. Let me know if you fancy putting together a curry for 4 people, otherwise you might have to suffer my attempt, and no one wants that!

Saturday 7th January - Winter League

Tee times from 11:40am, yellow tees, stableford

Sunday 8th January - January Medal

Tee times from 10am, White Tees, Strokeplay

Scottish Golf Registration

Everyone should have had an email asking them to register for the new Scottish Golf Website. If anyone missed it, the link for instructions on how to do so is here

https://youtu.be/x3k1Wu9zjKk

You will need your CDH number which is on the club website, or on the scottish golf app.

The new app will be launching on the 9th January, with the old one expiring 31st December - because of this a couple of asks please

1) Scoring - all scoring will be done manually for the next couple of weeks, so please record your score on a card - we will not be applying the 95% rule to handicaps, so just use your course handicap and we will apply that across the competition.

2) Sign up - Please sign up, if you can, for the Hind Cup and Currie Bowl on the current app. For the Currie bowl after Saturday, if you want to play, please drop me an email. I will ask for a separate email list for the following weekend events, after which, the new app should be up and running. Please DO NOT email me yet for the 7th and 8th January.

Many thanks

Neil Porter

Honorary Secretary

27/12/2022 Course closed today

All the courses closed this morning, so Hind cup cancelled and rescheduled for this Saturday 31st December.

Usual rules and try and bring a present if possible for a luckydip swap.

Competitions

VMS/DotGolf

As you should all be aware, VMS is being replaced with the dotgolf software. A new app will be released by Scottish Golf soon, and currently, you can't post any General Play scores on WHS, until after 7th January. When the club receives further comms, we will let you know. In the meantime, continue to sign up to play for competitions this side of the new year on the VMS app. I have opened the sign up for the Currie Bowl as well, but this may be run via the new system, assuming all goes well, but please do sign up via VMS in the meantime if you intend to play.

Hope to see you all at one or more of the games over the festive period, but if not, have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best

Neil

Honorary Secretary

6/11/2022 Braids United Annual General Meeting 2022

Hello

An important date for all your diaries - Saturday 3rd December at 4pm. This is the date of the Braids United Annual General Meeting, in the clubhouse. It’s your chance to have a say in the running of the club, put forward suggestions, and also a chance to put yourself or someone else forward to become part of the committee. At no other club are the members so key to the running of the club so we really encourage you to turn up to this once a year event and join in the discussion

The draft agenda is attached as well as the draft minutes of last years meeting for approval and also a nomination paper for applying to join the committee. This should be returned to me by 29th November

If you would like anything added to the agenda for the meeting please let me know by 25th November.  Also if you can’t be there in person but want something raised please let me know and I will make sure it is raised and discussed.

But really hope to see a good turn out for this important meeting

Mark Munro

Secretary Braids United
