and their Descendants

by the BFO Research Committee, 24 March 2012

Alice Brough was christened on 3 November 1776 at St. John's, Longton, Staffordshire, England. She was the sister of Richard Brough (1786-1873) and the daughter of Richard Brough (1759-1801) and Ellen Parrott (1751-1789). Alice married Charles Hassall (1776-1861) on 17 June 1801 in St. Giles, Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire. Alice and Charles had ten children and lived in Longton--where Charles worked as a "Potter". Charles died before 1861, and Alice died on 30 January 1866 in Longton and was buried on 4 February 1866 in the churchyard of St. John's, Longton. Interestingly, a number of Charles and Alice Hassall's descendants were buried at the Church of the Resurrection in Dresden--which is the same place that Richard Brough was buried. (See below the "Hassall Family Marriages and Burials" in Dresden.)

William Hassall was the first son of Alice Brough and Charles Hassall, and was christened on 23 October 1803 at St. John's, Longton. William married Grace Jervis (or Jarvis: chr.1807) on 3 July 1825, in St. Michael, Stone, Staffordshire. William and Grace Hassall had six sons and lived in Longton and Trentham--where William worked as a "Miner of Coal" and as an "Agricultural Labourer". William Hassall died on 2 November 1867 in Trentham, Staffordshire.

William Richard Hassall was the sixth son of William Hassall and Grace Jervis, and was born on 5 June 1850 in Trentham, Staffordshire, William Richard marred Eliza Smith (1852-1942) on 30 January 1871 in the Church of the Resurrection in Dresden, Staffordshire. They had six children, with their first four children born in Dresden and Trentham--where William Richard worked as a "Potter". In 1882, William Richard and Eliza immigrated to the United States and settled in Ohio, where they had two more children. William Richard Hassall died in about 1887 in Toronto, Ohio; and his wife, Eliza, died on 27 January 1942 in East Liverpool, Ohio.

William Hassall was the fourth child of William Richard Hassall and Eliza Smith. He was born on 20 January 1878 in Trentham, Staffordshire, immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1882, married Emma Louise Conrad (1877-1957) on 12 June 1901 in West Virginia, and lived in East Liverpool, Ohio--where they had two children and William worked in "Pottery". William died on 7 May 1969 in East Liverpool, and was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio; and his wife, Emma, died on 6 August 1957 and was also buried in the Riverview Cemetery.

The two children of William Hassall and Emma Louise Conrad were: 1) Louis Charles Hassall, who was born on 6 January 1909 in East Liverpool, Ohio, married Maud Hanna Bryer (1919-1999) on 1 August 1946, died on 6 December 1989 in East Liverpool, and was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio; and 2) Jean Caroline Hassall, who was born on 10 January 1913 in East Liverpool, Ohio, married Edward Joseph Lane (1912-2002) on 9 May 1932, died on 9 February 2001 in Woodland Hills, California, and was buried in the Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio. Edward Joseph Lane was a well-known radio and television sports broadcaster in East Liverpool and Youngstown, Ohio.

At the present time (2012), the BFO has documented more than 50 known descendants of Alice Brough and Charles Hassall in England and the United States.
