From Student to Certified Coach: Lessons from the Final Stretch
Wrapping up the Georgetown Leadership Coaching Program was both a celebration and a deep learning experience. From powerful alumni insights to a humbling (and ultimately rewarding) final recording, this last module reminded me that growth often comes from the unexpected.
What if your clients aren’t really hearing your questions?
In our latest session with Georgetown's Executive Leadership Coaching program, we explored how the way we ask questions can be just as important as what we ask. Drawing from Robert Kegan’s work and powerful peer insights, I reflected on how communication, change, and coaching intersect.
Plus: why “safe-to-fail” experiments might be the secret to sustainable progress.
Have you ever paused to ask yourself: Am I hustling for the right reasons—or am I truly living life to the fullest?
Today, I was reminded just how fragile life can be. The sudden loss of a high school classmate sparked deep reflection—and a powerful coaching session with Cohort 82 helped me explore the tension between hustle culture and intentional living.
In this post, I share:
A personal moment of vulnerability
Insights from the SCARF Model
A coaching lens on leadership blind spots
And a reminder we all need:
“Tomorrow is not promised. But if you don’t prepare in the present, your tomorrow is already spent.”
Leaders don’t operate in isolation. They exist within complex systems, and coaching must consider those interconnected dynamics.
When leaders apply new insights, the ripple effects extend beyond their own role—impacting teams, company culture, and long-term strategy. Are those shifts aligned with their broader vision? Are they fostering growth or unintended friction?
As I dive deeper into my coaching journey through Georgetown’s leadership program, I’m constantly reminded how coaching isn’t just about individual transformation—it’s about systemic impact.
💡 Power in coaching isn't always where you think it is.
A seasoned leader sits across from a young professional and says, “I’m next in line for a promotion. I need your guidance—tell me my next move.”
Who holds the power in that moment? The experienced executive? Or the coach?
Power dynamics in coaching aren’t about hierarchy; they’re about influence, trust, and the ability to evoke awareness. I recently had my perspective shifted on this, and I captured some insights on creating trust in the coaching relationship.
A Journey Beneath the Surface
What’s hiding beneath the surface of who you are?
We talk about self-awareness. We talk about leadership. But how often do we talk about the hidden identities shaping our actions, decisions, and relationships that influence our leadership?
Through Your Unique Cultural Lens, I uncovered insights that weren’t just about me—they were about how we all navigate the world, often unconsciously. Understanding these layers changes everything. It transforms how we coach, how we lead, and how we engage with others.
Let’s explore together. What have you uncovered about yourself that has reshaped your perspective?
The Missing Tool in My Leadership Arsenal
I used to think leadership was about mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise. But looking back, I realize I was missing a crucial tool—coaching. It’s one thing to advise, but another to truly empower others to uncover their own motivations, strengths, and purpose. This realization changed the way I lead. What’s a leadership lesson that shifted your perspective?
Ever faced a challenge so daunting it made you question, "Am I really ready for this?"
As part of Georgetown's coaching program, I needed to find and coach three professionals for 10 hours each—a task that seemed insurmountable at first. But thanks to the power of community, an incredible cohort, and a trusted network, I discovered just how transformative these connections could be. Grateful for the support and excited to jump into this journey—let's embrace the challenge!
How does personal growth unlock leadership potential?
Through Georgetown's Leadership Coaching program, I've been exploring how frameworks like Carl Jung's Individuation and Bowen's Self-Differentiation shape not just our identity, but also our ability to lead amidst complexity. From desired traits to dreaded traits, each insight reinforces a powerful truth: Leadership isn't just about guiding others—it's about evolving ourselves.
Let me share how these lessons are reshaping my coaching perspective!
Coaching isn't just about what you do—it's about who you are in the room. Your presence as a coach can inspire, transform, and drive outcomes that truly matter. How do you connect authentically to unlock a client's potential?
