For years I have had an interest in launching my own business. The thought of creating something of my own, with my own flavor and spin, with the intent of serving others, is something that I care deeply about.
The number of ideas I have had that have come and gone is ridiculous. Often filled with self doubt, but also with reality… I had trouble convincing myself that I had something important enough, and valuable enough, to offer the world. Nothing I came up with seemed worth risking the time, energy, and financial commitment to see it through.
Well, that has changed.
Reflecting on the joys and triumphs I have had throughout my life, I have held the belief that I am good at supporting and guiding people. It was not until my good friend, Bill Sisk, reentered my life after his retirement from the Navy. By chance, after a couple of years following my retirement, Bill and I ended up at the same firm. Bill had shared that his journey included a pit stop at Georgetown School of Continuing Studies' Institute of Transformational Leadership. When Bill and I reunited, Bill was just a couple of months away from obtaining his International Coaching Federation Associate Certificate Coach credential after completing Georgetown’s Executive Certificate in Leadership Coaching Program. Leadership Coaching… I was intrigued.
Bill and I established a regular cadence where we shared our military transition experiences, insights into the firm, experiences with our clients and respective contracts… and coaching. Bill eventually convinced me to apply for the program. I ended up being waitlisted when I first applied. I waited until the next year, applied again… waitlisted… again. I had resigned to focusing on other pursuits. Then, I got the call…a seat in the program had opened up… I was in.
After clearing it with my leadership and client, I accepted the offer and prepared for Module 1, Day 1… I was going to learn how to be a leadership coach… I was excited!
Finally, formally learning something I was already passionate about, professionalizing in a discipline that offers incredible value and impact to those it serves, on the path to bona fide expertise… I finally found something important enough, and valuable enough, to offer the world!
This series will offer insights into my journey of becoming a leadership coach and launching my own business. I hope you’ll join me…
Stay true.
