Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Artifact Description: This is a weekly plan of what I am doing with my two groups for reading small groups. This was all based on a book that was different for each of the groups. This focuses on two of the 5 small groups.
Connection to ITPS standard: This artifact is connected to 6N) uses modeling, explanation, practice, and feedback to teach students to monitor and apply comprehension strategies independently, appropriate to the content learning; This is a schedule and lesson plan of what I taught in small group reading for the week with two different groups. They saw a model and echo-read the book with a teacher each week. The students then used that when they read with a partner the next day.
Description of what was learned: I learned how to break up lessons for small groups while ensuring I take up enough time to allow them to read the book for their group.
Artifact Description: This is one of the websites that students use to read books at their level. We got these levels from the start of the year testing.
Connection to ITPS standard: This artifact is connected to 6J) selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers); This website gives the option to listen to the story be read to you, you read the story or you just listen to the story.
Description of what was learned: I learned that this app can be used anywhere but sadly costs money. I know that the students in the class I was in loved the Epic app.
