The Dancing White Man

Helplessness can manifest itself in many situations and in many forms. Also in the form of someone dancing poorly, while trying to look cool.

To address his own feelings of helplessness when dancing to Salsa or Reggae music, artist Leonard van Munster created a robotic self-portrait: "The Dancing White Man" (2012). This facsimile robot of himself dances to Reggae music in uncomfortable, even awkward motions.

As white men ourselves, we can only feel the helpless discomfort that this robot conveys.
