Artist Statement

My work aims to compose my stream of consciousness onto a substrate in order to create an image. I paint with the intention of allowing color and line to guide the viewer eventually through every aspect of the composition. I want every detail to be considered, and because of that, I work to make the work easily accessible though not so easily digestible that it is easily disregarded. I usually work out the piece by starting directly on the substrate, giving me animated forms and less rigid compositions.

In the work are ideas of nostalgia, surreal experimentations, formations bordering on psychedelic, and an implication that pop culture has a consistent, albeit frayed, place in my paintings and drawings, and therefore, my consciousness.

Jon Baker makes art that is illustrative, with figurative elements featuring narrative surrealism. Jon suggests nostalgia in much of the work and allows and prefers even, that meaning be found per the individual. The stream of consciousness way he works, while not entirely devoid of meaning, does not lend itself to be controlled by meaning. Jon grew up all over the western United States, including Oregon, where he currently resides. He began taking an interest in art at a young age because he loved superheroes, comic books, and cartoons. For a brief time he attended a lame for-profit school, then later went the community college path at El Camino College, where he was able to study studio art under great instructors as part of his formal education. Since moving to Portland he’s had his first solo exhibitions at Donnie Vegas and at Portland’s Finest. Jon has also been involved in group shows including Tea on 65th, an invitational curated house show with a number of artists. As he works towards completing school, Jon plans to explore opportunities to show work in the form of murals, more shows, and publications.
