Last Sunday, we were excited to welcome Mahdi who joined us for the first time! He is a dedicated lead steward at another site with many challenges that unfortunately has made it really difficult to run events. Despite the challenges, Mahdi has been creative in running walks at his site, and even biked all the way to Betty Sutherland on Sunday to help us out! We are fortunate to have Mahdi join us, as I am learning lots already from him and look forward to continuing to work together.
Kriselle also brought her passion Sunday and we managed to remove a LOT of the garlic mustard patch we found last week (see picture above of giant bag full of plants)! We stopped as there was more to remove, but this isn't the ideal time to remove it. This is a patch we will return to next year before other plants come up which will make it easier to remove it, preventing it from going to seed which also means less waste (we can compost the plants without seeds). We also clipped more DSV which is growing rapidly now and producing a lot of seed pods. As a result, we will target this plant again this Sunday as well.
On our way out, I love looking around and seeing the native plants thriving. While there is more to do, it's wonderful to see things like black raspberries spreading and growing fruits in abundance, as this is just one of many food sources for all of the beautiful wildlife that calls this park home. Come join us next time to help support this biodiverse park!
