This past Sunday we made an exciting discovery - we found native plants in the area that we removed a huge patch of buckthorn seedlings back in 2022!
Check out the differences below (keeping mind that the 2022 picture is from a different season, however):

Post DSV & garlic mustard removal reveals native plants
Can you spot them? 😮
Native white avens and potentially native yellow avens, golden rods and a baby sumac are given room to spread out over time.
I also tackled the Japanese Knotweed which is still small in comparison to 2022, despite us not being able to go in last year to cut it. It is always so encouraging to return and see the impacts years later. You can see me here with the tallest piece I cut, which is still quite big! I collected a bag, and there are still more seedlings growing that we will have to cut next month to keep it under control.

The tallest Japanese Knotweed was as tall as me!
It's so easy to get lost in the work of removing invasive plants, there is something really therapeutic about it. Time is up, so I look for work that we can put our efforts into in the next session.
This time, we spot an area filled with garlic mustard that is hiding some natives. It is part of the area we removed buckthorn seedlings from. This will require some extra hands!Â
Think you are up for the challenge to find out what native plants are hiding? Come join us next time!Â
