A simple way to start building a strong math community is to simply change the way we look at problem solving. We can open up problems by asking our kids "what do you notice? what do you wonder?". I first learned about this as a strategy from our SD36 Helping Teachers, Jen Barker, Chris Hunter and Marc Garneau. Whenever they would pose a problem for us to consider they would start by asking "what you notice?". You can also use it as an instructional routine with just about any problem.

Asking students What do you notice? What do you wonder? during problem solving can help build strong math communities by:

• Inviting participation from all learners. Low risk. Everyone can notice. Everyone can wonder.

• Creates a safe space for students to share their thinking without pressure to have told give an answer.

• Shows kids that they have valuable ideas in math. Working on critical thinking and communication.
