A short introduction to Focused Walking for Parents
My Mentor Growth Walk Journal Entry
Student Journal Entry; Platform PowerPoint
Our amazing Literacy Helping teachers, Celine Feazel & Jas Kooner, listed A Walking Curriculum as a suggestion for a literacy activity for Continuous learning for our families. You may have already seen it. You may have already started using it. I am definitely behind the times, and if you know me, I have no shame in admitting it. I am in love with it! Why didn't I know about this sooner?? Or why wasn't I creative enough to think do to something like this with my learners myself!? I'm so excited to grow in outdoor learning.
I started my learners on a walking curriculum journey three weeks ago. Each week we do mindful walking with our families. Each week is a new focus. Sometimes numeracy focused, sometimes science focused, and sometimes literacy focused. I give my learners a few guiding questions to consider as they walk, and a few reflection questions for afterward. Each week I create a mentor entry in my own Walking Journal, to share with them. Each week they create a journal entry of their own. I gave them the choice of platforms; Sway, PowerPoint, Flipgrid or Notebook. They have created the such beautiful work, they are having so much fun being photographers. It's been such a pleasure "walking" with them.
I purchased the Kindle version of the whole resource for $4.95 on Amazon. There are 60 ideas for A Walking Curriculum. I linked the 5 Free Sample Walks that Gillian Judson released. Kyle Brown, one our SD36 SEL Advocates, shared a link for the Walking Curriculum 30 Day Challenge found on our SD First Peoples Learning Teacher Website in his last Pro-D. This is a beautiful resource with beautiful photographs.
