Agia tells Severian something about the Pelerines as they continue on foot to the Botanic Gardens to select an avern flower for the duel. At the Gardens they become sidetracked by a visit to the Sand Garden. At one point in her banter, Agia says, “Urvasi loved Pururavas, you know, before she saw him in a bright light.”

eponym - one who has given his or her name to a group or place; such as a tribe or town.
tholus - a circular domed building or structure; a dome, cupola; a lantern
liana - a tropical vine
Caesalpinia sappan - a tropical tree from which the heavy wood brazilwood is obtained. Brazilwood is used as red and purple dyewoods and in cabinet work.
