Agilus, the shopkeeper of the rag shop, tries hard to talk Severian into selling Terminus Est to him, but Severian refuses; suddenly, an officer of the Septentrions enters the shop and wordlessly delivers a challenge to mortal combat with averns on the Sanguinary Field.

vicuna - a South American animal closely related to the llama and alpaca.
psychopomp - a conductor of souls to the place of the dead.
hipparch - the commander of a xenagie of cavalry: about five hundred mounted soldiers.
avern - an artichoke-like plant of extraterrestrial origin, grown in the Botanical Gardens of Nessus, and used as a lethal weapon by duelists on the Sanguinary Fields.
monomachy - a single combat; a duel.
Sanguinary Field - the dueling arena of Nessus located northwest of the built, living section.
Septentrions - the elite corps guarding the northern frontier of the Commonwealth. They have a reputation of being barbarians.
muni - a sage.
oriflamme - a banner that is golden and bright.
palmer - a pilgrim wearing palm leaves as proof of a holy visit.
