Math Club

Objectives

It helps in arousing and maintaining students’ interest in mathematics.
It provides the students with opportunities to develop their explorative, creative and inventive faculties.
It inculcates the habit of self-study and independent work among the students.
It offers an ideal avenue for a free exchange of mathematical ideas and for frank and helpful criticism of these ideas.
It helps in developing heuristic and problem solving attitude among the students.

Benefits & Responsibilities

You will have a chance to experience the beauty of mathematical ideas, explore challenging math problems, and discuss types of systematic approaches to problem solving with your teacher and peers at the advanced level.
You will be motivated to attend the following mathematics competitions as an individual or school-wide team and we would love for you to be part of them.
- UIL Academics: These academic tournaments are against other HISD middle schools. The UIL Academics include 3 categories.

This 22 - 23 school year, 6th grade team (3 students), 7th grade team (3 students), and 8th grade team (3 students) have been chosen to represent Lanier for UIL.

a) Calculator Applications: Students will take a test containing 80 problems in 30 minutes. The contest consists of problems which may include calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, roots, and powers. Calculators are permitted.

b) Mathematics: The contest consists of 50 multiple-choice problems covering, but not limited to: numeration systems, arithmetic operations involving whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, exponents, order of operations, probability, statistics, number theory, simple interest, measurements, and conversions. Geometry and algebra problems may be included as appropriate for the grade level. Calculators are not permitted.

c) Number Sense: Students will be given a 10-minute, fill-in-the-blank test which they shall complete without doing calculations on paper or on a calculator. Erasures, mark-overs, and mark-outs are not permitted. Concepts covered include, but are not limited to: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions, and use of mathematic notation.

- American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) (https://amc-reg.maa.org/) - Sometimes we will host the AMC as we did in the previous years. These competitions are open to all the students in our school if they are interested and pay for the registration fees. There will be no "qualifying" test for AMC. The test will be hosted at Lanier under teachers' supervision as proctors and no parents should be involved in the testing process. The dates for AMC8, AMC10, and AMC12 competitions are normally around November, January, and February respectively. The schedule is subject to change.

- MATHCOUNTS (https://www.mathcounts.org/) - Normally we registered our school for the exam to take advantage of the early bird discount. The top 10 students will be selected to represent LMS to participate in the competition. Among these 10 students, 4 students will form a team and their scores will be counted as LMS team score. Last year, our LMS team advanced to State Competition held at Austin.

a) $30 per competitor for schools

Every registered school receives the School Competition Kit to run its program for the year.
As many students as are interested can participate in practices and the School Competition. Registration fees are based on the number of competitors representing the school at the Chapter Competition.
Schools with 40% of students on free or reduced lunch or receiving School Wide Title I funding receive a discount.

b) $60 per non-school competitor (NSC)

- University of Houston Math Contests (UH Math Contests) (https://mathcontest.uh.edu/) - The Department of Mathematics at the University of Houston will host its High School Mathematics Contest in January annually. The contest will consist of 9 Individual Exams as well as The SmackDown Event. Certificates and gift cards will be awarded to the top students from each individual exam. In addition, Team Trophies will be awarded and shipped to schools based upon overall student performance on the individual competitions. Individual exams will be given in the following areas: Algebra 1, Geometry; Algebra 2; Pre-Calculus; Calculus; Statistics; Physics; Number Sense; Calculator Usage; SmackDown. Last year, these exams were given ONLINE on the day of the contest, with a time limit of 50 minutes. (Exceptions: Number Sense is a 30 minute exam, and SmackDown lasts until students are eliminated and only one student remains.)

Students can take at most 3 subject exams, as follows and as permitted by the schedule.

Students are eligible to take AT MOST ONE of Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, PreCalculus provided that they sign up for an exam at or above the level of the course they are currently taking in school. Any student can take the Calculus exam (for which a student does not need to currently be enrolled.) All of these exams are offered in the same time slot in 2024.

The 2023 UH Contest will take place ONLINE on Feb 27, 2024! The contest is FREE!

You will have opportunities to meet with renowned mathematicians and speakers from various institutions and universities. You will learn how to master fundamental concepts, develop your problem solving and critical thinking skills to foster a good working habit which will ensure your long term success.
There will be club fees for math-club t-shirts.
We are in need of copy paper and graph paper for our Math Club use. If you can donate a box of copy paper or graph paper, it would be highly appreciated. This is of course optional, but a great support.

University of Houston Math Contest 2024

Lanier Math Club is looking for potential students who can represent Lanier at the University of Houston Math Contest 2024 for High School Math Levels. The 2024 Contest will take place ONLINE on Feb 27, 2024!

The contest will consist of 9 Individual Exams as well as The SmackDown Event. Certificates and gift cards will be awarded to the top students from each individual exam.
