Most signs in Bangla SL are believed to be indigenous to Bangladesh (or South Asia more generally), and have no connection to other sign languages abroad. However, some signs appear identical to or share some similarities with foreign signs, such as those of American Sign Language (ASL). Sometimes these foreign signs are used alongside local signs (like the different signs for THANKS), but in some cases they have overtaken the local signs (like the sign for YEAR).
From our research, we cannot be sure if these are direct loans from ASL, loans from another language that ASL also borrows from, or simply a coincidence. More research is underway to learn more.
Those signs which we have deemed to appear similar to ASL signs are marked with the label "ASL-concordant". Keep in mind that this does not necessarily mean the sign comes from ASL, it only means it looks similar to the ASL sign.
