Even though the details of my goals may change, my overall purpose remains constant: to facilitate my students' journeys and provide a set of educational experiences designed to support their mastery of the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to achieve their goals as a healthcare provider, researchers, teachers, and public servants. To do that, I need to keep asking questions, searching for answers, and passing the information on to others. I will continue to do so in the programs I am currently teaching. Still, I hope to be able to become more involved in the School of Medicine and the Association of Diagnostic Laboratory Science at the national level, specifically contributing to the Continuing Medical Education program.
Another goal I have is to become a leader in curricular issues in medicine, as I am co-chair of the Curriculum & Competencies Committee at Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine. There are many ways to deliver medical knowledge, such as lectures, labs, think-pair-share, case discussions, team-based learning, self-directed learning, and clinical apprenticeship. An effective and enjoyable teaching approach is to design a curriculum using the combination of the abovementioned techniques. To become an expert in this area and mentor other colleagues, I will keep attending the training, workshops, webinars, and reading articles.
Finally, I plan to develop research projects that complement current research within the institution, involve female or minority students to enhance their hands-on skills, and encourage them in their academic careers.
