Assessing Lanes for Change: Using an Occupational Therapy Lens for the Enhancement of Water Safety Awareness and Swimming Participation in an Urban Community
This Doctoral Experiential Capstone was divided into two main parts: Scholarship and Experiential. Many factors play a role in each, however the scholarly components are more focused on research and supporting literature documents, while my experiential focused on continuing to disseminate the information on-the-go and understanding the role of OT in structured swim programs.

Capstone Manual
Population: Caregivers
Need: A lack of programs educating the individuals supporting our youth
Why: Socioeconomic barriers and literature supporting caregiver influence on swimming skills (see two buttons below for references and supportive documents)
Importance: Drowning is preventable.
In the United States (U.S.), children ages 1–4 die from drowning more than any other cause of death.
Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in children ages 5-14 in the U.S.
An estimated 11 deaths per day occur in the U.S. by drowning.
Many racial and ethnic groups face higher drowning rates than white individuals.

Created and disseminated a 4-week long educational program to caregivers affiliated with my site on well-rounded components of water safety through an Occupational Therapy lens.
During these 4 weeks, 12 sessions were delivered in-person.
Each session was 20-30 minutes long, and covered a different topic (check out my water safety manuals to view the cumulated handouts.

This program was run for 2 phases (8 weeks total), both of which covered the same materials and surveys.
