What led me to want to do a capstone focused on water safety? Why was working with a swim program the perfect site for me?
From the very young age of 3 or 4, I began participating in my hometown's recreational department swimming lessons. If you ask my family, they will tell you that I was paddling away in the pool at family barbeques long before that.
Fast forward to my college years and I became a swim instructor, teaching children and adults the foundational swimming skills I was fortunate to learn.
Around the age of 8 years old I joined a local recreation team. This is where I really, truly fell in love with the sport. I made friends and had an incredible coaching staff that taught me the foundational skills of competitive swimming. I learned the value of setting individual goals, but also working as a team to become an improved and successful unified program. I did not know it then, but this is where so many of my life lessons came from; managing excitement, disappointment, and every challenge inbetween.
Then, around 15 years old I transferred to a club program that was very involved in the organization, USA Swimming. This swim team increased the competitive demands of the sport and I learned a tremendous amount about the importance of balance when maximizing swimming performance. It was with this program that I learned about perseverance and the importance of receiving support when you're in need. Swimming has taught me so much about not only physical health, but mental, emotional, and social well-being. Kingfish also gave me the travel bug, it was here that I went on my first flight!
I am incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to continue my swimming journey and competitively end it with the Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Owls Women and Men's Swimming and Diving program. This program absolutely gave me the best four years of my undergraduate college experience. I remember the weeks leading up to leaving for school being nervous about finding my "community," but the very first day I spent with this team, I knew I had a family. The SCSU community, my fellow teammates, and the coaching staff gave me a level of support that I will be grateful for for the rest of my life. Together we worked so tirelessly, and it was here where I saw some of life's biggest pay offs. I recognized life is never going to be linear, and that this is part of what makes the successes worth cherishing all the more. Thank you, SCSU, for everything and more!
How ironic is it, that the very pond I took swimming lessons at would be the home I started my lifeguarding career?! I began lifeguarding for the Town of Plymouth at age 15, and continued through all the way until the summer I completed my undergraduate studies. I learned an incredible amount about water safety hear, but most importantly, it is where I learned the value of water-based activities. I loved this job, I met so many people, and I will always reminisce on these summer days...no matter how hot it got!
I have had the incredible opportunity in this life to travel to many beautiful places. Bodies of water have always been an eye-catching and fun activity for me. To the left are just a few of the places I am so grateful to have splashed around in. I plan to continue to explore Earth's infinite beauty!
