From Passive Learners to Curious Inquirers: Empowering Students to Formulate Questions

In many Social Studies classrooms, teachers assume the role of the questioner, relegating students to answerers. Research has shown that students can improve at generating and asking more productive questions if they are given opportunity to develop this (Rothstein and Santana, 2011). Using the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) structured approach, students learnt the skill of formulating questions and through frequent practice, becomes a familiar way of thinking, reflecting and knowledge constructing in Social Studies inquiry-based learning. Participants will take away ideas on how they can adapt QFT to tailor to various student profiles for higher level of engagement in Social Studies.

Infusing Personal Qualities (PQ) into Social Studies Teaching

In this VUCA world, it is important for educators to guide and shape students to be future-ready and inculcate in them the desired skills and values through authentic learning experiences in a safe environment, as they prepare themselves to step into the real world. In Mee Toh School, this is done through the infusion of Personal Qualities- a way to learn values through behavioural traits, actions and skills — in our curriculum and programmes. Teachers identify the various PQs which can be taught during the lesson planning process and make the link explicit through the teaching in the classroom.
