Joy of Reading @ YTPS

To develop students’ love for reading and lifelong readers, it is important to build their self-efficacy and ownership. It begins with empowering students with voice and choice. A series of student-centered, interdisciplinary, cross-level reading activities are conducted throughout the school terms. These activities include:

- sharing their love for reading of CL storybooks and recommending interesting books to their peers through colourful and attractive picture boards.

- 15 minutes per week Sustained Silent Reading,

- World Book Day activity @ Library,

- Reading Super Star Competition and

- 6-to-1 storytelling sessions.

Students would have the opportunity to showcase their innovation and creativity through the choice of their work designs, cultivating students' reading habits and interests. Students introduce good books to their fellow schoolmates and create opportunities for students to share their reading experiences with one another beyond the classroom walls.

Enhancing the Teaching & Learning of Chinese Language through Learning Study

Learning study (LS) is a collaborative inquiry approach which aims to improve teachers’ lesson design. It’s essentially a variation of lesson study undergirded by the variation theory of learning. Going through the process enhances the professional competence of teachers as they co-create pedagogical content knowledge as a team to help students learn specific objects of learning. In this workshop, participants will learn from the FHPS CL teachers on how LS was used to strengthen lesson design. Participants will also have the opportunity to do hands-on activities on applying the LS approach to critique the design of a particular lesson.

Design Writing Lessons with Metacognition to Promote Self-Regulation of Students

In Chinese language writing lessons, with the help of the SLS and e-Pedagogy, teacher guides students to master the metacognitive strategies of writing, including story elements and writing techniques. Teacher uses Think Aloud to model how self-questioning can be used to achieve metacognitive regulation. Students speak aloud the plan and then arrange the outline before writing, and ask regulatory questions during writing to monitor and evaluate their writing. The lesson design demonstrates the learning effect of metacognition as an Assessment As Learning in writing, as well as the teacher's modelling of thinking aloud to cultivate self-regulation of students.

Let’s SCORE in Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension in their Mother Tongue Languages is highlighted as a challenge for many primary school students.  They reported difficulty in comprehending texts even when they are proficient readers.  However, with the design of the SCORE strategy introduced during the teaching and learning of reading, teachers are able to deepen students’ understanding of the comprehension texts and acquire higher order comprehension skills such as synthesising, analysing, reasoning, comprehending, applying and evaluating. Participants will go away with ideas about how SCORE provides a schema that supports a reader to independently comprehend and respond to text.

Mastering the Proper Stroke Order of Chinese Characters through Gamification

When teaching penmanship and stroke order, teachers often have the problem of monitoring the students writing in the correct stroke order. As young learners picking up penmanship, this is a habit that will need to be cultivated from young. Thus, teachers face the problem of guiding and monitoring a class of students simultaneously. With the use of a writing app, it provides instant gratification through gamification and provides a good form of formative assessment in the daily classroom setting. This workshop will also explore creative ways to reinforce word recognition in students.
