Aesthetics Curriculum Integration and Innovation-Arts World Exploration

Curriculum integration is one of the methods used to engage students in active learning and arouse their interest as they make connections across subjects.

In this workshop, the conceptualisation on the use of ‘World Culture” as the theme-based model for curriculum integration between Art and Music will be shared with participants. The model aims to allow our students to graduate with an enriched exposure to 6 countries’ art and music cultures. This approach aligns to the 21CC and our School Vision. In view of the commonalities that Art and Music education share, AWESEM (Arts World Exploration SEMester) was developed to deepen students’ interaction with the various world cultures and reinforce the interpretation and creative skills required of students in both subjects.

Facilitating Creative Musicking through Stories in the Lower Primary Music Classrooms

A story-based approach is effective and engaging for several reasons. Firstly, stories have a natural ability to captivate our attention and stimulate our imagination. Secondly, they provide context and meaning to the music being taught, allowing an exploration into its historical background, cultural significance, emotional themes and musical motifs used.

Finally, it encourages active listening, creativity and self-expression, prompting students to develop their performance and improvisation skills and interpreting music in unique and personal ways.

Participants will take away ideas of how they could adapt these lesson resources for use in their classrooms.

Creating an Inclusive Middle Primary Music Classroom to Enhance Students’ Learning Experience and Metacognition with the Use of Technology

As teachers teaching music at the middle primary level, it is important to create an inclusive learning experience for students for greater engagement in their lessons. Using technology like Scratch Programming, teachers design lessons for students to develop not only their music skills but also their social and communication skills. Teachers have observed that students face challenges when they come together to collaborate. Therefore, these lessons aim to develop collaborative learners and thinkers in an inclusive music classroom. Participants will take away lesson ideas and have a hands-on session to co-design lessons using Scratch programming.

Playful Ways to Learn Music

As teachers, we aim to provide our students with the opportunity to be critical thinkers and be curious about their surroundings. It is also important that we keep the joy of learning alive to keep students intrinsically motivated to learn. Using The Pedagogy of Play, we incorporate practices and strategies to actively engage our students and let them experience joy through play. We also introduced inquiry-based learning into our music programme as we create opportunities for exploration and knowledge building conversations. Participants will leave with ideas of how we promote playful learning and some of the practice and strategies used.

Enhancing Primary School Students' Learning of Singing with Drama Strategies

There is an inertia for students to sing songs in a language other than English or in their Mother Tongue when there is no opportunity to flesh out the meaning of the lyrics in a fun, engaging and embodied manner. With activating prior schema and using drama strategies to make the lyrics come to life, students will be more willing to apply their learning to sing out with gusto. This workshop aims to empower music teachers with using drama strategies so that it elevates the quality of understanding of lyrics and increase engagement.
