The Aabasaheb and Kamalabai Sardeshpande Central Library, established in 1972 as part of the Nya. Tatyasaheb Athalye Arts, Ved. S. R. Sapre Commerce & Vid. Dadasaheb Pitre Science College, Devrukh (Autonomous), was created with the primary mission of supporting the academic objectives of the college. It accomplishes this by providing both physical and intellectual access to resources that meet the evolving educational and research needs of the college community.
Role of the Library
Often referred to as the “soul of education” and the heart of the college, the library plays a vital role in curriculum development and satisfies the intellectual curiosity of its readers. It actively supports the college's academic mission by acquiring and sharing resources that meet the curricular and general needs of students, faculty, and staff. The library’s efforts to procure, evaluate, and organize learning materials make it a valuable resource for teaching, learning, and research activities. This aligns with Dr. S. R. Ranganathan’s description of a library as a trinity of resources, users, and library staff.
The library features a reference section, journal section, reading hall, and stack room, and boasts an extensive collection, including textbooks, reference books, general books, journals, magazines, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, manuals, bound volumes, CD-ROMs, video lectures, online resources, and other reading materials. Books are organized according to the Dewey Decimal Classification. Since 2015, the library has been a member of the British Council Online Library and now provides access to over 6,237 e-journals and 3,135,809+ e-books through the N-List Database.
Library Automation
The library uses SOUL 3.0, an advanced software developed by the INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad, for comprehensive library management. This system facilitates various functions including Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Circulation, Serial Control, Administration, and OPAC. With seating for 75 users and seven terminals for online access to information resources, the library effectively supports the college community’s informational needs.
