Q-Tips and paint. That's the major materials that you will need for this great lesson. For this project, students create a Pointillism painting in the style of the impressionist painter Georges Seurat. Students will find an image from nature (either a landscape or animal) to recreate in this style.
After an image is selected, it is submitted to me in a variety of methods. Images can be submitted through Google Classroom, gmail, or AirDrop if a student has an iPhone. The image is printed out and then enlarged onto an 11" x 17" piece of paper to be traced onto a piece of 11" x 14" tagboard. The students will trace the image onto the paper to be used as a guide for their painting.
Before working on their painting, the students will practice combining dots of the primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors. Once the students have mastered this practice exercise, they are ready to move on to their painting.
Not every color that the students will use will be able to be mixed directly with primary colors. Because of this, students will have to figure out the "color formula" to find the needed color. To make this easier, students will use Trycolors to practice mixing colors digitally in order to find out which ratios of paint they need in order to create their desired color. This tool is quite helpful as the students can quickly add and subtract colors and get a digital result instantaneously.
Below is the presentation that I show my students to introduce the topic of Pointillism and Georges Seurat.
Blooket is used as an assessment tool for this lesson. Students will have fun playing games while reviewing the presented content. To review the topics and to check for student understanding, this Blooket game is played by my students.
