Jackson Pollock was an American painter who is well known for his action painting or better known as drip painting. This style is quite messy and is something that most art teachers will not invite into their classrooms in the same method that Pollock did.
A few years back I did a lesson with my second-grade students on Jackson Pollock where we used yarn dipped in paint to create a similar effect on a piece of paper. Images can be seen below. Before we painted, I read the story Action Jackson to my students to set the scene and present appropriate level facts to them about his paintings and life.
Jackson Pollock Painter is an online application that can be used by students to create a Pollock-inspired "digital splatter painting." The controls of this application are quite simple. Move your mouse around the screen to create drops, splatters, and lines of paint. The faster the cursor moves, the smaller the drips and lines will be. To change color, click the mouse once. Creations can be saved by right-clicking the screen and selecting "Save Image As..." This is a great mess-free way for your students to experience the creation processes of this well-known artist.
