Ideally, patients will spontaneously recover from a neuromuscular block.
However, depending on how much neuromuscular block is left in the patient's body, a reversal agent may need to be administered.
Suggamadex
The main reversal agent used is suggamadex, which is a neuromuscular reversal agent that inactivates rocuronium. No effect on succinylcholine.
Used for:
Patients who are at risk of experiencing postoperative residual neuromuscular block (e.g., patients >80 years, patients undergoing thoracic surgery).
Adverse Effects:
May cause perioperative anaphylaxis
May cause bradycardia (vasoactive drugs, such as atropine, should be available)
