Total IV Anesthesia

IV agents can be solely used during the maintenance phase if you want to avoid using volatile agents. Propofol is the most common choice.

Indications:

• Malignant hyperthermia: Absolute contraindication for the use of volatile agents. 

• High risk of PONV: Volatile agents are associated with an increased risk of PONV.

Disadvantages:

• Target serum concentrations of IV anesthetic agents are not as easily maintained as with volatile agents
