Autonomic Agents

During surgery, anesthesiologists manipulate the activity of the autonomic nervous system to ensure that vitals are kept within a healthy range. 

Anesthetic agents and surgical techniques often cause hemodynamic insults; when the patient does not respond to reducing the anesthetic depth or fluid administration, autonomic agents may be used to keep the blood pressure and heart rate within an acceptable range.
