Desflurane

Used for:

• Volatile sedative-hypnotic agent used for induction and/or maintenance of anesthesia 

• Very rapid onset and recovery, similar to sevoflurane – ideal for longer procedures 

• Low uptake of the drug into adipose tissue, ideal for patients with obesity

CV Effects 

• Decreased BP: Systemic vasodilation, minimal decrease in myocardial contractility

• Minimal HR change: Desflurane decreases the baroreceptor reflex.  

Respiratory Effects

• Increases RR and decreases TV

Contraindications:

• Malignant hyperthermia
