Overview of Neuromuscular Blocks:
Neuromuscular blocks (NMB) are used to paralyze skeletal muscle and facilitate intubation (GA goal: Akinesia). This helps prevent coughing and gagging.
NMBs have no analgesic or amnesic properties. NMBs are only given after the patient is adequately anesthetized.
Adverse Effects:
Higher doses can cause postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade, decreasing the patient’s ability to maintain an open airway
There are two general classes of NMBs: Depolarizing and nondepolarizing NMBs.
