Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Artifact description: Both artifacts are copies of a study guide and a test used in the Functions unit. Both artifacts are very similar because we want the student to have a study guide that is like the test. Don’t you hate when you study and nothing you studied is on the test? The two artifacts were given to the integrated math LDI class of 9th graders, the study guide was completed first by students, and then worked on it together in case anyone didn’t know how to do something they would get a chance to see how the problem is solved. The study guide was also able to be used on the test day and collected with the test for grading.
Standard connection: These two documents connect to the Illinois teaching standard 9 Assessment because it demonstrates that I am aware of the importance of assessing students through formative and summative assessment.
Reflection: While student teaching, I learned the importance of knowing what is on the assessment so you can teach and prepare students to be successful on the test. I also learned how important it is to assess students because it helps a teacher to see if students are understanding the material or if they need additional time to go over the material again and give the instruction.
