Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Artifact description: The pictures above are from a fun and engaging lesson in which students needed to find the mean and Median of a data set using a deck of cards. Students already had prior knowledge of finding the Mean and Median of a data set but know it was time to practice but with a twist.
Standard connection: This lesson demonstrates the Illinois teaching standard 3, planning for differentiated instruction because you can see that I planned a review game but made it into a fun and engaging lesson by thinking about what ways can I differentiate the instruction to meet the needs of my students.
Reflection: This lesson was so much fun to create and put into place. Along with buying enough decks I also created a recording sheet in where students had to write down the 7 cards the pulled out and would have to find the mean and median of every round. This lesson made me reflect and think of how I can differentiate instruction so that students understand the content better by using real life objects.
Artifact description: The slide above is a review game for the sequence and function unit. I created a math review game using a basketball game in where students had to answer 8 questions. Each team consisted of 3 players, a “scriber” which was the person to solve the first question, then a “checker” which was the next person to check for any mistakes and the “shooter” who had the chance of scoring an extra point for having the correct answer. Every round each member had to switch positions.
Standard connection: This lesson demonstrates the Illinois teaching standard 3, planning for differentiated instruction because you can see that I planned a review game but made it into a fun and engaging lesson by thinking about what ways can I differentiate the instruction to meet the needs of my students.
Reflection: Creating this review game made me really sit down and think about ways to differentiate instruction and how to support my students learning in a way that they can learn it better.
