The trophy is going home to Chapel Hill after UNC picked up another National Championship on Sunday.
In the first period, Matson took a stroke but in a shocking twist, Annabel Skubisz was able to come up with the save to keep the game even. This was the first time this season that Matson missed a stroke and only the fourth missed in her career.
It's okay, because freshman forward Ryleigh Heck decided to show the world that she is the next star to come to UNC. The Heels earned a penalty corner, which Matson slipped to Sietske Bruning, who then swept the ball in where Heck was able to redirect it past the goalie.
With the lead up 1-0 at half, Northwestern had still not even recorded a shot. However, Northwestern calls themselves the "Cardiac Cats" for a reason, the team does their best work in the second half.
The finals was no different. Northwestern pulled Skubisz to give them an extra field player in Chloe Relford. Relford was then able to create a turnover on a UNC free hit, after the ball found a defensive foot in the circle.
In the Wildcat's lone corner of the game, Bente Baekers took a perfectly placed shot and was able to tie the score up at 1-1 with under two minutes left.
In the midst of Northwestern celebrating, Matson got serious and went for the revenge for the earlier missed stroke. UNC aerialed the ball deep into their offense 23, getting the ball to Paityn Wirth. Wirth was able to get around her defender and send the ball towards the net where Matson sent the ball in.
Congratulations to both teams on amazing seasons, and especially to Erin Matson for a historic career.
