National Athletic Training Month: Chris Lyver
March is National Athletic Training Month, this month we will be highlighting different athletic trainers that work with field hockey programs across all levels.
The first athletic trainer that we would like to highlight during this month is Chris Lyver, MS, LAT, AT.
Chris is currently the athletic trainer for the Sacred Heart University field hockey team. He also is the athletic trainer for the women’s basketball team and the 4x national champion cheerleading program. Chris started at Sacred Heart University back in 2015 when he first started working with the field hockey program.
Pro League Recap (Men's): 03/06
The men were back in action for the first time this year, as Australia, Argentina, and Spain battled it out in Australia.
Australia
Australia went 1-3 in this set of matches.
In the first game of the series, Australia lost a 2-2 match in shootouts to Argentina. Jeremy Hayward showed up strong for the Kookaburras, scoring both goals off penalty corners. He led the team in shots with five and in tackles with three. Eddie Ockenden and Lachlan Sharp both recorded assists in the match. In goal, John Durst tallied a total of six saves. During the shootouts, Tom Craig and Craig Marais both were able to convert, but the goalkeeper was only able to stop one of the five attempts.
Pro League Recap (Women's): 03/06
Over the course of six days, six games were played for the FIH Pro League in Hobart Australia.
United States
The United States only won one of their four matches.
They played their first match on March 1st against a strong Australian team. They only were able to produce one corner during the game, which came in the fourth quarter. Kelsey Bing did a great job keeping them in the game, by making six saves to keep the Eagles alive. Only two shots were recorded from the USA in this match, one from Ashley Sessa and the other from Sanne Caarls. Bing took the game to shootouts, where she only allowed one ball in. Charlotte De Vries, Ashley Sessa, and Leah Crouse, all converted on their shootout attempts.
Pro League Recap: 02/26
We saw lots of scoring this weekend, with all three teams winning one game apiece.
The first game of the set was on Thursday when the United States picked up a 2-0 win over China.
Looking at the score, you would be amazed to learn that China had 13 corners throughout the match, but managed not to score. Their corners lacked variation, with only one or two involving anything other than a drag flick.
In goal for the States, Kelsey Bing played another phenomenal match, making a total of 7 saves to keep China off the scoreboard.
Pride in Hockey: Why Davis Atkin’s Story Matters
Davis Atkin, Australia’s first openly gay male player, will be playing for team Australia in the upcoming matches in Rourkela.
Responses on Twitter are harsh, asking why it matters and if anyone cares.
Field Hockey Player Efficiency Rating
John Hollinger created a Player Efficiency Rating (PER) to use for the National Basketball Association (NBA). The stat looks at the efficiency of players.
Ice Hockey, baseball, and soccer have adaptations that have been created over the years. But, due to the lack of professional level, at least in the United States, there is no adaptation of the formula for use in field hockey (or at least that I can find).
I decided to tackle this issue by creating a formula for use in field hockey with the most commonly produced statistics on collegiate field hockey websites.
The Biomechanics of a Stroke
What is a Stroke?
If you are like my teammates, when I asked them if I could videotape them doing a stroke, when you hear the word, you probably think of the medical event. In the field hockey world, this is a specific type of penalty shot that creates a large offensive advantage. A single player lines up 7 meters away from the goal and takes one shot from a stationary position.
What are we looking at?
This is a comparison of the biomechanics of an inexperienced player (a goalie), versus an experienced player (a stroke taker for a division one program).
