The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Rationale: This assignment focused on the idea of disciplinary literacy in my specific field. Since I am a physical education major I had to relate disciplinary literacy and physical education and write ways this can be used in the gymnasium. In this assignment my goal was to show others the importance of reading, writing and speaking in the physical education discipline.
Standard Connection: Throughout this assignment I had to prove to others how can physical education and disciplinary literacy relate and how this can be brought into the classroom to educate students to read, write and speak in the discipline of physical education. This artifact relates to this IL standard 6A) "understands appropriate and varied instructional approaches used before, during, and after reading, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas;" If the teacher has a better understanding of how to read in their own discipline they can share that knowledge with their students. I think I demonstrated that throughout my paper and gave multiple examples of ways to implement disciplinary literacy in physical education.
Self Evaluation: Overall when I first was told about this assignment I honestly thought to myself how could disciplinary literacy relate to physical education. Although now I can say I have learned so much about how disciplinary literacy can be implemented in physical education and how important it is to be knowledgable about your discipline. I learned that everyone has their own discipline and reading can be done in a variety of different ways.
Rationale: This artifact is a paper I wrote in my disciplinary literacy class where we chose a non fiction trade book and write about how it relates to my discipline. Since my discipline is physical education the book I chose was The Story of Roberto Clemente by Wilfred Santiago. In this paper I talked about many ways of how this book can be useful in physical education.
Standard Connection: This artifact connects to IL standard 6G) "understands how to design, select, modify, and evaluate a wide range of materials for the content areas and the reading needs of the student;" In this artifact I broke down how this book can be used in physical education and made it clear that reading can be implemented as long as you get creative. The book I chose was appropriate for all levels and will not only relates to those who enjoy sports but this book allows for imagery, history and facts.
Self Evaluation: Overall I learned how to choose a book that relates to my discipline and engage students in reading. Physical education is a rare subject where you will see reading but I think it is important to implement and as I stated in my paper this is something I to try in my future classroom.
