The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting
Rationale: This is a journal entry I made during my student teaching at Neuqua Valley High School. I student taught an adaptive physical education class with peer partners. The students who are the peers in the class were selectively chosen to be in this class. Since there are peer helpers in this class we do journals to ask them how their experience is and what we can do to help.
Standard Connection: This artifact relates to standard 4H) understands the use of student data (formative and summative) to design and implement behavior management strategies. This was more of a formative assessment we gave to the peer helper students to get a better understand of their environment in my classroom. In the direction I also allowed for this assignment to be a safe space for students to share things that they may not be comfortable sharing with others.
Self Evaluation: Overall this is something I will use in my future classroom moving forward. I loved hearing what the students had to say and I felt like I also learned more about them individually based on their responses.
Ms. Marin's Class Expectations
Rationale: In this assignment I created a list of expectations if I were teaching at the elementary school level. My expectations are short and clear to the point. These expectations were made for my curriculum project I also created. This list is to help the students environment stay more organized and safe.
Connection to Standard: When creating these expectations I took into consideration of my background knowledge. When I completed this assignment I had a better understanding as to why teachers and each class all have their own expectations. This artifact can relate to standard 4J) creates clear expectations and procedures for communication and behavior and a physical setting conducive to achieving classroom goals; As I stated before my expectations were clear and simple for the students do understand and read on a daily basis. I also had certain words bolded to ensure the students got the point for each expectations. This will allow for the physical settings to be more safe and healthy for the students.
Self Evaluation: I wrote these expectations about two years ago and after coming to the end of my student teaching there are some things I may add. I am glad we took the time to make our own expectations because sometimes people over look the importance of them. Every classroom should have them and they may not all look the same because as we say students are all different and unique so are teachers.
