The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Rationale: In this assignment I created a lesson plan using the understand by design technique which offers three stages that creates a backward design for teachers to follow. The first stage is the desired results which includes the big idea of the lesson, the standards that coincide with that idea and lastly what the students will understand and the essential questions asked. The second stage is the evidence where the teacher comes up with three ways to assess the students in order to see if they are reaching the big idea. The last step is the planning where the teacher will come up with a variety activities for the students to participate in and learn more about the central idea of the lesson. These activities will relate to all the things discussed in stage one in order for the students to gain that knowledge and skills throughout the lesson.
Standard Connection: Throughout creating and learning about understanding by design lesson plans I noticed how this can articulate into something I can use in my gymnasium as a physical education teacher. This idea of a backward design really helps me focus on the big outcome and what I want my students to get out of the lesson. One performance task indicator that relates to this lesson is 1H, "analyzes and uses student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students and leads to ongoing growth and achievement". As I mentioned the whole idea for using a Ubd is to start with the end goal and work toward that achievement. This design creates an opportunity for all students to meet the end goal by working with their needs and being able to adjust to those students.
Self Evaluation: Overall I think I did pretty well on this ubd lesson plan especially since this was very new to me. Some weakness I had throughout creating this lesson plan was my essential questions. I had to come up with at least 3 essential questions and I was getting my understanding and questions mixed up. As for my strengths I think I found great variety of activities for my students to do that relate to the big idea of my lesson plan. Each activity was very different and gave the students something new to learn each time. This assignment was a new learning experience for me and something I want to use in my future teaching.
Rationale: In this lesson plan I created a cardio workout using Hulu hoops. Since it was a cardio day I did not want it to be a typical cardio workout. Instead I had music playing and each student was given a Hulu hoop to put on the ground. As a class we did a series of different jumping techniques using that Hulu hoop. After our workout we played a game using the Hulu hoops called time machine which the students loved and everyone was able to be involved.
Standard Connection: When creating this lesson I chose an activity that could be modified and things could be changed on the spot. I also had multiple back up plans because I had a ton of creative ideas with using the Hula hoop. This standard relates to 7G) "understands how to make data-driven decisions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student;" In my lesson plan I have it broken down into 3 activities now every class may not have gotten through all of them but I like to plan ahead as my cooperating teacher taught me. I also had transitions where I would have to set up equipment but I had things the students could do while that was happening instead of just waiting. Especially in adaptive physical education it is great to break lessons into short and sometimes long activities.
Self Evaluation: This was one of my favorite lesson plans I have ever done and really enjoyed teaching this lesson. I got great feedback from the students who enjoyed it. This will be definitely be a lesson I teach again if I ever get the chance.
