The uniform regulations establish rules and standards that apply to all FBI uniform configurations, ensuring professionalism and consistency across all Bureau field divisions and units. These regulations apply to all personnel authorized to wear any form of FBI-approved uniform, including Standard Field, Raid, Tactical, and Plainclothes configurations. All personnel conducting field or enforcement duties must use one of these four approved uniform types as shown in the official reference images below. Identification Standards
Agents must carry valid FBI credentials at all times while in uniform.
Visible “FBI” identification (patches, armbands, or badge) is required during enforcement, arrest, or any public-facing operation.
Identification must not be obscured, altered, or displayed misleadingly.
During covert or surveillance operations, visible identification may be removed only with Command authorization.
Usage Guidelines
Uniforms may only be worn for official duties, field operations, or approved training.
Off duty agents are authorized to wear gear and uniform, however, will be held to the same standards as on-duty agents.
Any modification to uniform loadouts (color schemes, identification placement, etc.) requires the approval of supervisory personnel.
Hair and Grooming
All personnel representing the Bureau must maintain a clean, professional, and neutral appearance while in uniform, whether in the field or during operations.
Hair
Hair must be neat, well-kept, and not interfere with the use of headgear, radios, or protective equipment.
Hair color must appear natural and not distract from a professional image.
Hair length should not exceed the foot and should not cover the face below the eyebrow.
Eyewear and Glasses
Glasses must be professional in style and neutral in color (black, brown, gray, or clear).
Tinted or colored lenses are permitted only if operationally authorized (e.g., orange ballistic eyewear).
Accessories and Jewelry
Excessive jewelry or visible personal accessories (rings, bracelets, chains) are prohibited, at to Command discretion
Religious or medical identification jewelry is permitted if it does not interfere with equipment.
Watches, tactical wrist devices, or GPS units are permitted.
Face
Faces should maintain a neutral, professional appearance. Face tattoos, piercings, or facial markings visible in uniform are not permitted.
Facial accessories such as masks, bandanas, or coverings must be regulation-approved (e.g., balaclavas for Raid or Tactical operations only).
Beards and mustaches are permitted only if trimmed and maintained; excessive facial hair is not allowed.
