Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight…
Up in the sky,
far
far
away, burning your life
only to give us a small tiny light
Millions of years ago, you decided to burn yourself out
A bright light of despair
Pain, pain, pain…
Not until you burned down
did people realized your beauty
Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what I was?
Burning my life for somebody else
Only to light their life for a single second
When you realized, and when you reached out,
You were millions of years late
I ask you,
did you even know my name?
---spring is yet to be far
God has fallen, the Virgin is raped. Tell me, who had plundered the golden apple? Tell me, what color is your gore? Spring has passed and summer has come, drink your tears and welcome fall. All is left in dead winter. All is left, in dead winter.

“It is time to wake up, Miss.Lilith.”
A clear voice woke up Lilith. Sunlight was coming in from a small fogged glass close to the ceiling. Nobody called it a window, but just a piece of glass. No way to open it, no way to look outside. Simply just there to bring in a small patch of sunlight. Lilith was able to get more sunlight than the others though, since she had one of the biggest rooms in this brothel. Still it was only enough to make the room slightly bright. Lilith had small pieces of a broken mirror hanging by the glass, making dots of lights floating around the room. One of those lights was stinging Lilith’s eyes, forcing her to wake up. She sighed and got out of the bed. She could sense the girl who came here to wake her up patiently waiting outside the door.
“Yes, I will be there in a minute”
“Master said to come directly to his office. He is going to have breakfast with you.”
Lilith made a face and cursed in her mouth.
“Yes, alright. You may go now.”
Lilith released a long sigh and turned back to her closet. One might pass out looking in this closet, dozens of dresses lining up that some could work their whole life and still could not afford a sleeve of a dress. It was the symbol of her authority. It was what proved she was at the top of the hierarchy, the most expensive woman in the house. “One night with Lilith, and you can’t live but think about her…” Men will fight with each other, piling up money to spend a brief moment with her—and she will just be sitting there, watching everything from a high place. Somebody even called her a devil once, seducing men and eating up their souls. Lilith was quite pleased with this, being named after the devil’s woman. Anyways…she picked up a tight-fit wine-colored dress out of the closet and sat at the makeup table. Her makeup was always simple, black eyeshadow, a bit of an eyeliner, and dark red lips. She combed her pitch black hair and let it hang as it is. And to finish off, a mysterious smile. One that always had others guessing. One that always made her look undefeatable. She slipped on heels and open the door, heading to the top floor of the brothel. The top floor was dedicated to who everyone called the “Master”, the owner of this brothel and the one who grips on everybody's collar. He was a tall, skinny guy with sharp eyes and was absent for most of the time. Lilith took a breath and knocked on his door.
“Oh, about time. Go on dear, come inside.”
There was a small table set by the window. Master stood up and pulled the chair for Lilith to sit. He cheerfully poured fresh coffee and added a psychopathic amount of sugar in his cup.
“Oh, it has been ages since we ate breakfast together! Lilith, dear, how have you been?”
“I’m good as always. Mr.Brown has been visiting frequently, and his business seems to be failing because of that. Matter of time that he won’t be able to pay off the debt. The girls you brought last time… not a material of the higher rank I’m afraid. One of them has already failed. Other than that, not much to note.”
“Ah, well as expected. About Mr.Brown, oh, he will pay the price. No need to worry. And about you…”
Master scanned Lilith up to down and slightly tilted his head. Lilith felt a drop of sweat tracing down her back. This gesture of his, it never meant anything good.
“Although you have the authority, it doesn’t mean you can act freely, yes?”
“...yes.”
“One must always obey the rule to maintain the order, am I right?!
“...yes.”
“I recently heard that you are acting slightly off the rules…and you KNOW that I don’t like that, darling?”
“...yes.”
Master grabbed Lilith by her hair and yanked her towards him. His sweet smile faded and lifeless eyes were grasping Lilith’s heart.
“Then, act, that, way.”
“...Yes, Master. My sincere apologies, Master.”
“Well enough. Still I think you shall spend the rest of the day in the basement. I will escort you down there.”
Lilith felt her heart skip a beat. She knew this was coming, yet she could never be ready for it. Her hands were trembling and her smile was shaking. Master offered his hand to Lilith. Lilith slowly took the hand and they headed down towards the basement. It was going to be a long, long day for Lilith.

“It is time to wake up, Ms.Lilith.”
A clear voice woke up Lilith. It was cloudy today with no sunlight stinging Lilith’s eyes. Lilith turned her head towards the door, unable to get up.
“Yes, I am awake. I am going to rest for the morning. You may go now.”
Her whole body was aching and she could feel that some of her wounds are still bleeding. Every now and then Master would “educate” the girls. The more they disobeyed the rules, the more sivire the education was. Sometimes they didn’t come back from the basement. Someone like Lilith who had more authority than the others would go through this periodically so that Master can manipulate them. The content of the education was…something that shouldn’t be listed here. Pain, fear, and grief…No matter how rebellious one is, they will become oddly quite and subordinate after they had been educated. That is all one should know about. Lilith pulled up her comforter to her face. She wanted to rest as much as possible when she still could.

“It’s time to wake up, Ms.Lilith.”
A clear voice woke up Lilith. Lilith sprung out of the bed and rushed to the door.
“Is that you, Mary?”
Opening the door, a girl was gently smiling at Lilith.
“It is me Lily. I couldn’t wait anymore because you haven’t seen me for a LONG time!”
“Oh dear, I’m sorry Mary. You know I was busy, it’s the end of the month…Please do come in. Do you have to go anywhere today?”
“Well my customer for the morning cancelled his reservation. I can’t stay long because I might get called for a fill-in, but I have some time for a cup of tea.”
Mary jumped into Lilith’s bed as she owned it and started to roll around on it.
“I’m glad to see you Mary.”
Lilith sat on the edge of the bed and stroked Mary’s cheek. Such a beautiful, sweet face. Blue eyes, rose cheeks, small lips. Lilith fixed her dark blond hair and kissed her forehead. Mary smiled happily and hugged Lilith.
“There there…I have some good tea that one of my customer gave me, would you like that? Or would you prefer you regular?”
“You know I don’t like trying something new. Regular please?”
Lilith pinched Mary’s cheek a bit and got off the bed. Dargline with plenty of milk and sugar. This was Mary’s all-time favorite and it was something shared just between the two of them.
“Oh, I have plenty to talk about Lily! There was this guy who just wouldn’t stop pulling my hair…”
Lilith was always the silent one in the conversation. She liked looking at Mary’s face, busy complaining and gossiping about random stuff. She liked how she would show fifty emotions within three lines. She would never get tired of it.
Mary and Lilith, their relationship goes back quite a long. When Lilith was still a middle-class prostitute, Mary came in. Lilith was told to take care of her as a senior, and they soon bonded up. Mary was a sweet little girl with innocence written all over. It made one want to protect her. It made one want to keep her hidden from all the awful things. Lilith was one of them too. She did everything she could do to protect Mary. Once Lilith started working as a high-class prostitute, she made Mary busy with chores and errands to keep off as many men as possible. Master somehow didn’t seem to care, and therefore Mary had a somewhat free position compared to others. They adored each other and would stick together anytime possible.
“I better go now, thank you for the tea Lily.”
Mary kissed Lilith on the cheek. Lilith gave her some candy to take back and walked her to the door. The time spent with Mary was like a precious gem to Lilith. It made her day bright and because of her, she was able to keep up with all the hard work. Lilith slowly laid down on her bed. Mary had left a slight scent of rose, a perfume Lilith gifted. Lilith woke up and wore the same perfume. Fixed her makeup, and changed her clothes. Right then, she heard a knock on the door.
She checked the mirror and smiled. It was time for her to go down to the other room. Being a high-class prostitute was not easy. Dealing men after men and entertaining them in all kinds of ways… However, this was just an ordinary day for her. Another boring day for Lilith.
December 20, 1925
Smoke was all over the room. Lilith could feel her mind fogging. She was lying on the ground, yet the ceiling was spinning round and round. She blinked slowly. Her skin was itching but she had no energy to lift her arm.
Somebody was singing far away.
December 31, 1925
“It’s time to wake up, Ms.Lilith.”
Lilith was already awake this day. She opened the door and greeted the girl who was in charge of waking her up every morning.
“Good morning, Susan. Thank you for this year, and here is a little something since I couldn’t give you a Christmas gift.”
Lilith handed over a small handkerchief. Susan took the handkerchief in awe. The handkerchief made some clinging noise, and Susan immediately looked up at Lilith.
“I apologize I only can give you my old handkerchief. I didn’t have time to check it so there might be some stuff left in there, please don’t mind.”
Lilith bent over to look into Susan’s eyes.
“Use it wisely, ok? I need some extra help at today’s party.”
Susan nodded and left swiftly, holding the handkerchief close to her chest.
Lilith went back to her room. Dresses were spread all over her room waiting to be chosen. It was New Year's Eve, a special day for the brothel. Every year they would have a big party to celebrate the year's success and to yearn for more customers for the next year. Since all of the prostitutes would participate, many men would come to flatter with them. It was a big opportunity to find a rich customer who would drop a fortune for them, allowing the prostitute to move up to a higher rank. Since Lilith was already at the highest rank she didn’t have to worry about this. However, this party meant a lot to her. She roamed the room and finally picked out a bright red dress for the night. Although the party started in the evening, she had a lot to do and there was no time to waste. As a senior once told Lilith, “Beauty takes time”
The party was held in the first-floor lobby, where they would clear out all the furniture and make a big space for everybody to fit in. Men, young to old, were patiently waiting for the girls to come down. Some were nervous, some were not. Eventually the time came and the girls walked down the stairs. Beautiful girls with all kinds of dresses, smiling elegantly. Such a spectacular view. Lilith was one of the last ones to come down. She scanned around the hall and spotted some of her customers. She immediately walked up to one of them and started chatting. One by one, she walked up to her customers—it was easy since she didn’t have much, being the most expensive prostitute in the brothel—and greeted them. It was when Lilith went to get a drink to take a break that she saw something unexpected. It was a boy, about Lilith’s age. He was standing nervously by an old man, who seemed to be one of the customers. It was not an everyday thing to see someone this young, even in this situation. He was looking around uncomfortably, and then his eyes met Lilith’s. Lilith nodded slightly, gesturing him to come over. The boy showed a sigh of relief and slip through the crowd.
“Would you like a drink? It’s not that often you can drink a good quality of alcohol in this social situation.”
“Ah, then, I’ll have a glass please.”
Lilith took a glass for him and raised hers.
“To this beautiful moment of hell.”
The boy seemed to not know what to say, but still held up his glass too.
“What brought you here? You seem too young to afford one of us.”
“Oh, no, my teacher brought me here. I didn’t notice what the party was about till I came here though. I wouldn’t have come otherways.”
“Don’t be so nervous. It’s not like we’re going to start off in this room. Today is a day off for us. A brief respite, you could say… Well, you said that the old man is your teacher. What does he teach you?”
“Art. I’ve been under him learning art for a couple years. He doesn’t really teach me anything though, it’s more like a reason for me to escape from my parents. Like they care about me at all…”
“An artist. How interesting. I have a small painting in my room. One of my senior was an artist. She would draw with charcoal, tea, coffee, anything she could get hold of. But then she got killed and I managed to steal one of her drawings.”
“Oh, um, oh. …Is it often someone gets killed?”
“Why?”
“Because you don’t seem to feel anything about it.”
“...Nobody lives above 30 here, dear. Many can’t even reach their 20s. We are merely just a tool. Once you step into this building, you can’t leave. —Oh, don’t make that face. Don’t pity us. This our normal. We live by this.”
The boy stared at Lilith. Lilith couldn’t read his emotions behind those eyes.
“May I have your name?”
“Lilith.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Lilith. I’m Elias. …We will meet again, pretty soon I think.”
February 20, 1926
“It’s been a while Lilith, how have you been?”
Lilith couldn’t wipe off her surprised expression off her face. It was somebody totally unexpected.
“You!”
Elias chuckled and nodded.
“Glad you remembered me. Yes, it’s me from the party.”
“But, how, how were able to afford me?”
“Haha, well, money is not my problem. I just needed some time to arrange everything. I wanted to talk to you more.”
Lilith raised her eyebrow.
“Talk to me?”
“Yeah, just give me a minute…”
Elias pulled out a pile of paper from his big, old leather bag. He placed those paper on the table in front of Lilith.
“You said that you don’t get to go outside this building, right? And I also thought you might be interested in art. So, here you go.”
The first paper on top of the pile was a beautiful painting of a sky.
“...Sky.”
Lilith paused for a while, staring into the painting. Elias smiled and took another paper from the pile.
“Here, this one’s a forest, and this one is…”
Elias’s painting were all beautifully finished, showing scenaries that Lilith has long forgotten. Blue sky, green forest, small wild flowers, bird, dog, cat… For the whole time he stayed, Elias would just show Lilith his drawing and talk about it with her. Lilith felt her heart being filled up with something she couldn’t explain.
“Well, I’ll come again soon with some other drawings Lilith.”
Elias smiled and lifted his hat.
Lilith realised she was smiling. A genuine smile, not the one she would always wear. After Elias left, Lilith climbed up a chair to peek through the window. She managed to see his head walking down the street. A bright brown hair shining gold under the sun. That gold was something she remembered long after this moment.
February 24, 1926
Cold drips of water was hitting Lilith’s face. She was breathing heavely, with her whole body trembling. Master was smiling looking down at her.
“There there, don’t be so afraid. You’ve been through this before…”
March 8, 1926
Smoke was all over the room. Lilith could feel her mind fogging. She was lying on the ground, yet the ceiling was spinning round and round. She blinked slowly. Her skin was itching but she had no energy to lift her arm.
Somebody was singing far away.
March 29, 1926
Mary was on Lilith’s lap, with her arms around Lilith’s neck.
“I’ll always be with you Lily.”
Lilith hugged Mary tightly.
June 21, 1926
Smoke was all over the room. Lilith could feel her mind fogging. She was lying on the ground, yet the ceiling was spinning round and round, then it melted and separated again. She blinked slowly. Her skin was itching so much, but she had no energy to lift her arm. Flies were buzzing close to her ears. She could feel that there was not much time left for her.
Somebody was singing far away.
June 28, 1926
“It’s time to wake up, Ms.Lilith.”
A clear voice woke up Lilith. Lilith slowly got out of the bed.
“...Yes, I’m awake. You may go now.”
Lilith grabbed a gown and rushed downstairs.
She knocked on a door at the end of the hallway.
“Mary, come over!”
“What happened Lily?”
“Oh, just come, quickly!”
Lilith invited Mary into her room and made sure no one was outside in the hallway.
“I did it Mary. I finally did it.”
“Did what? …Oh, OH! You did it!?”
Lilith showed Mary her desk. A small pile of milled herbs on a plate was there. Lilith slowly picked up the plate.
“I finally found the formula. This should be able to cure the effect of the drug. I tried it, and oh how better I’m feeling.”
Lilith scooped a pile with a spoon and brought it in front of Mary.
“Here. Try it.”
Mary slowly poured the powder in her mouth and drained it with water.
“Oh my this is bitter.”
Lilith took Mary’s hand and led Mary to her bed.
“Here, lie down for a bit and tell me how you feel.”
“I…I can breathe a lot easier I think. And the headache I had, it’s going away!”
Lilith and Mary smiled at each other.
“This is wonderful Lily!”
“Now I have to wait for Elias to come over, then I can arrange things.”
“Elias?”
Mary’s face became gloomy.
“Who’s Elias?”
Lilith looked at Mary like she didn’t understand what she was saying.
“Wha…what do you mean who’s Elias? I’ve talked about him to you before, he’s the one who might be able to help us.”
“Oh, yeah, now I remember…never mind it.”
Lilith raised her eyebrow.
“Are you okay, Mary? There might have been side effects. You should rest for a while. I’ll bring you a cup of water.”
By the time Lilith came back with a pitch of water, Mary was asleep.
“I might have to make some adjustments…”
Mary sat at her desk and started going through her notes again.
“......”
Lilith sprung up.
“What time is it?”
She had fallen asleep without realising. She hurriedly checked the window. It was already starting to get dark.
“Mary, Mary!”
Lilith rushed back to her bed. Mary was nowhere to be found there.
“Did she have a customer and headed back?”
Lilith went downstairs and knocked on the door at the end of the hallway. No response.
“Mary, Mary, oh…”
Lilith was at loss and started to walk back and forth, thinking of what to do.
“Lily.”
Mary was there, behind Lilith, looking at her curiously.
“Mary! Where have you been? Don’t ever leave like that!”
“Calm down Lilith. I just had a quick job to finish. I was just about to head back to your room.”
Lilith hugged Mary tightly.
“Don’t ever leave like that…”
Mary hugged her back and patted her shoulder.
“I’m sorry Lily. Let’s get back to your room. I’m feeling a lot better now.”
They went back to Lilith’s room and Mary guided Lilith to her bed.
“You’re tired Lily. You’re the one who needs rest. Here, I’ll be right by your side.”
Lilith held Mary’s hand. Her eyesight was foggy, and she soon fell into a deep sleep.
June 29, 1926
…Somebody was singing far away.
June 30, 1926
Lilith felt her heart skipping a beat. Something was not right. Something was telling her of danger.
She rushed downstairs. Almost trembling down the stairs, she ran to the end of the hallway. She smelled iron. Bloody, iron. Feeling her heart pounding, she opened the door.
There was blood everywhere. A fat, naked guy was swinging his hips towards the floor. No, not the floor, he was on somebody. Dark blond hair with blue eyes, somebody rather familiar…
“...Mary…?”
The guy stopped his movement and turned around.
He was smiling.
July 1, 1926
I heard a bell ringing far away. The flies were constantly buzzing in my ears. I wouldn’t shake it off because I knew there’s nothing there. I see a purple smoke rising towards the ceiling, dancing like a snake. A smoke from a cheap, shoddy cigarette named “Angel”. I never really liked smoking. I just did it because…I don’t know, I don’t think there even is a reason. I pressed the tip of the cigarette on the floor and stood up, looking hopelessly at the body in front of me. White, white as a porcelain doll. Beautiful and so…fragile. Right, I killed him for her and because of him she died and, because of him she died and she…Mary, died, died?
I reached out to the white, naked body and clasped it to my chest. Smooth, porcelain skin. No, soft, warm skin. Clear, glass eyes. No, the eyes that would always reflect me. Only me. Doll, not a doll, dead, not dead. Died, died? No, lived, and died?
The flies were only getting louder. Somebody is singing somewhere far away. My sight was blurred with blood. Doll, no, Mary? Mary, Mary, was smiling softly and whispered with her kind, sweet voice.
“I died”
Empty eyes were looking at me, yet it wasn’t focused.
“I was raped by that guy. I was stabbed in my uterus with a knife. I mean, literally…”
“It was more hot than painful. It was like a burnt medal stick having shoved up in my body”
“Weird, right? It was hot, really hot. But then everything got so cold. After that, there was nothing”
The body in my arms was losing its temperature responding to the words. Her head snapped back and swayed left and right like a baby that can’t settle his head.
“I died. I, died. Died, died. Died…”
The body became a doll. Purple lips formed an arch, repeating words like a broken toy. The voice cracked up. The buzz of the flies broke my eardrums, maggots crawling under my skin hysterically.
Somebody was singing somewhere far away.
I could never remember whose song that was.
July 2, 1926
Lilith was standing in front of Master.
“What’s wrong dear?”
“Why did you do that to Mary.”
“Your pardon?”
“Why did you have to let Mary die like that, why, why did you have to let Mary go through that.”
Master stared at her with a blunt face.
“And who is this Mary you’re talking about?”
“Mary, middle-class prostitute, she lives on the edge of the third floor.”
Master raised his eyebrow.
“You must be confused, Lilith. There is no one named Mary, and there is no one living in that room. It was a storage. Until you made it a crime scene. I called you here to talk about that, miss.”
Lilith stepped back.
“No…you’re lying. No…No…”
“I guess it’s time over for you, Lilith. It’s a shame, you were the best we ever had.
Lilith breathed heavily. She couldn’t wrap her head around it.
“NO! You’re lying! You, you!”
She charged to Master. He pushed her back and tried to take control, but Lilith was all over the place. She stabbed him over and over with a knife she had hidden in her sleeve.
“Here, I thought it might be better for you to keep one. You know, for safety.”
Suddenly Master spoke with Elias’s voice. Lilith paused and looked down at him. He had already taken his breath. Lilith started walking unsteadly. She knew that he kept away guards when talking to her. She went to the backside of his room. There was a window a size that could possibly fit her through. She lifted the window and jumped without looking down.
Lilith opened her eyes. She woke up with the loudness around her. She heard lots of screaming… and yelling. She looked up, and noticed there were branches all over her. Lucky or not, she had fallen on top of a big bush. She just stayed there, looking up at the sky and listening to the chaos. She heard somebody walking towards her, but she didn’t have the energy to get up.
“Found you.”
A man was looking down at her. His face was somewhat familiar. Ah, Lilith thought. He was one of the guards.
“Killing master and not running away? If you’re going to do it, do it till the end.”
Lilith just stared at him. He offered a hand to Lilith and pulled her out of the bush.
“Everybody already noticed. Nobody knows what to do, just running around and screaming.”
He handed a bag he was holding to Lilith. Lilith didn’t know what to do or say.
“Now’s the time to go. Go. Run as far as you can. Someone will help you for sure. There’s no way that Master left no solutions. Just keep running and stay low. Don’t worry, you can trust me with settling the rest.”
“But…why?”
“I don’t know. I just always thought that this wasn’t the right way. I knew you were up to something, and I thought that might be a good thing. All of the girls, they deserve better.”
The man’s eyes were looking straight into LIlith’s eyes. Somehow Lilith thought that she might be able to trust him. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small bag.
“Here, take this. It has a cure for the drugs inside. It won’t erase the piled up poison, but it will at least help you get off of the drug.”
The man carefully took the bag out of Lilith’s hand and nodded.
“You can trust me with it. Don’t worry, I’ll do the best I can.”
The man pointed at the bag he handed earlier.
“There’s some of my clothes in there. It might be a bit too big for you, but at least it will keep you hidden. Take it and get dressed nearby. I wish you luck girl.”
Lilith grabbed the bag and sprinted away. Her body ached from the fall but she had no time to care. She ran, ran, and ran again. Finally, her legs couldn’t take it anymore and she fell down. It was somewhere in the forest. Lilith dragged herself and found a place she could rest. She covered herself with leaves and closed her eyes for a moment.
July xx, 1926
Lilith woke up— a bright light was stinging her eyes. She squinted so she could see better. The strong scent of grass stung her nose, and then she realized that she was lying on the ground, in the forest.
“How did I end up here…?”
The wind gently brushed her cheeks, combing her pitch-black hair with pedals stuck all over. A bird was singing somewhere far away, and the sunlight was falling beautifully through the leaves. Such a warm, wonderful day of spring. Something that was long forgotten within Sasha. It reminded her of something, but she couldn’t remember what it was. Maybe it was a memory from her childhood. Maybe, just for a moment, there was a time when her parents were kind to her and took her out to a picnic. Maybe. But she knew that did not ever happen, and she stopped hoping long ago. She was an unwanted child, and her parents passed away even before she noticed that. The world was too harsh for an innocent young girl. Before she knew it, she was too far down in a place she could never return from. A dark, dark place, covered in red and black. Isolated from everything.
Somebody was singing. A low, humming voice. She quickly pulled her mind back to the current place and slowly turned around. The song was coming from a boy, sitting a bit far from Sasha. He was sitting in a bright spot between the shadow of the trees, legs crossed. He seemed to be drawing on a paper with his head hanging down, and the sunlight made his soft blond hair shimmer. Ah, Lilith thought. Of course it had to be him taking her out. The only person she trusted. The only way to contact the outside world. His eyes were locked on a butterfly before him, trying to capture every detail from a single moment. Those eyes, those deep brown eyes, looked so pretty under the sun. Lilith always thought he was blessed by the sun, with everything shining so beautifully under its presence.
Her light.
My light.
My sun.
Lilith walked up to him. The butterfly crushed under her toes but he didn’t say anything, just silently looked up at Sasha.
“You woke up?”
Lilith didn’t answer and just curled up next to him. His hand stroked her hair, trying to get out the petals.
“It’s ok. Everything is over now. You don’t have to worry about anything. It’s ok. It’s ok…”
His touch was soft and his voice was gentle. Sasha felt everything calming down in her mind. She didn’t have anything to fear anymore. Everything was over. Finally, she got to rest. A long rest that she deserved. Her eyelids were becoming heavy and her breath calmed down.
She slowly let her self into sleep. It was her first time in many years that her body was willing to sleep.
Somebody was singing. A slow, humming voice.
Sasha closed her eyes. She was finally just a little girl that she always wanted to be.
