Ian Baynard is a Game Studies and Esports Management major at the University of Delaware. He studied at Akita International University in the fall of 2024. He took a creative writing course to further his creative mind and writing skills. He enjoys thinking differently and creating art in whatever form that may take. He loves playing video games and enjoying the wonderful spectacle of nature. He loves to try new foods. He also has a passion for cooking because they go together. This page is about his writing journey during his short time in Akita.

THE ROOM
THE ROOM
I am laying in this large room. I can hear the beep of the monitor. The flickering of the light. I can feel the pain of reality seeping through. This person comes in every so often. Check on me. What a beautiful sight they are. Selfless. Caring. Knowledgeable. Friendly. They bring me food. It is never any good. But they try their best to make such a burdensome task fun. When they leave, I realize my face is full of salty water. My heart is racing like a horse on a track. My mind is scrambling. My body is immovable. When I look around all I see are empty windows and solitary chairs. I hope to see that wonderful person again.

filled with what was assumed to be

Imagine the disappointment
of tasting the most bitter
unsatisfying dirt water ever.
Airplane food.
Most people know it is bad
but Japan is known for its
wonderful food
Such disappointment to taste the most bland
unappetizing “chicken” and “mashed potatoes” to ever
ungracefully touch my taste buds
First time eating natto
Definitely a memorable experience
A very earthy,sticky, stringy texture
Then it reminds you it's fermented…what a mess
The Chair
The Chair
Old, gray chair. Miscellaneous markings from years of boredom.
Stained with who knows what. One leg that doesn’t quite live up to expectations. Screeching across the floor caused by overused feet. In desperate need of a tennis ball. Always at the back of the classroom, where the light never shines. Never aforethought, always an afterthought.
A dispassionate student. Always late, bookbag full of hopes and dreams. Walks in full disappointment. Trudges to this chair and plops himself down. Without a care in the world he decides to take a trip to dreamland. He is disrupted. Constantly being poked. A loud screeching sound. Constant movement. Clothes sticking to the seat.
What a pain.
