Following the implementation of the large language model Cogniti at International Grammar School, we identified the need to equip students with foundational skills in generative AI. This led to the development of a GenAI Literacy Course designed specifically for Stage 5 students.
The course introduces students to English language conventions through the practical application of prompt engineering, enabling them to explore grammar in a meaningful and engaging way. As part of their assessment, students were asked to design a prompt to be included in a shared Prompt Library, which serves as an ongoing resource for their learning. These prompts were closely aligned with their academic subjects, supporting deeper understanding and achievement in areas such as Mathematics, English, and Science.
In future iterations of the course, we aim to:
Establish clearer links to Natural Language Processing (NLP) concepts, helping students understand how language models interpret and generate text.
Introduce opportunities for students to build their own AI agents, encouraging creativity, computational thinking, and ethical awareness in AI development.
Below you will find the NSW Scope and Sequence and the Google Slide lessons used to introduce key English grammar concepts.
