Amon-Ra Effendi Dobbins was raised in the inner-cities of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Dayton, Ohio. His parents raised him, his older brother, his younger sisters around the principles of truth, peace, and balance. His parents made sure they understood how to smoothly operate in both urban and mainstream cultures.
They practiced operating in urban culture at home, at church, and in the community and practiced operating in mainstream cultures at enrichment events, at school, and when visiting friends in suburban communities.
In school, Amon-Ra began to notice that several interactions between his middle school friends and teachers were getting more confrontational, while his exchanges remained relatively conflict free. It was later that he came to realize that his lack of conflict came from his ability to code switch.
It was clear to him that there were many educators who did not know how to read urban cultural codes accurately. Many language patterns which were culturally understood as playful in Urban culture were misinterpreted by staff as being intentionally negative or inherently disrespectful. Experiences like these continued for him and his friends throughout middle and high school.
In college, Amon-Ra remembered how he and his boyhood friends experienced very few teachers who could translate normal Urban cultural expressions into their proper cultural context. These memories generated a desire within him to become and educator who could help establish a pathway of communication that was culturally responsive and that empowered students from Urban communities to become fully engaged students.
Regardless of his given position in educational organizations and in independent business ventures, Amon-Ra has routinely used the authority of the given position to give all clients/students open access to the attainment to an equitable shot to the American Dream.
