So over the past four weeks, I did a thing. All of my Arts & Sciences were with the Needle during my SCA career. Bead Embroidery, stringing, sewing and Embroidery (multiple aspects) and I thought it would be nice to try something new. I had not painted since college. Mostly Fiber Arts and Perspective Drawing but not working with lovely color so with the help of Michele Servideo Stech, Sandy Mercurio Wheeler and Tamara Babulski and listening intently and reading everything by Kit (Wellner) I taught myself Illumination. Calligraphy will need to be the next step but being left handed it may take a while. The most interesting aspect of Illumination, besides the research, composition and imagination was how to obtain the perfect consistency of gouche for Pergamenata - (sanding and pouncing). A mix between Half-n-Half and cream.
So for Hawkwoods Alchemy of Spring Event hosted by the Proposed Canton of Blue Sky I designed a Scroll that I will send to Kingdom, via Sandy Mercurio Wheeler. The design is the Hippocampus. Always enjoyed the Hippocampus in Percy Jackson and I thought it would be a good scroll to send for Youth who are the future of the SCA.
I was honored to be notified that the scroll won the Hawkwood's Garden category in the Novice competition ( Novice, how cool is that) today so post I shall.
I have alot to learn and I will keep studying the supreme Scroll makers of our Kingdom. But I am happy with this little scroll. Now on to the next. Hint: the next will have beading in it as well.
So here are those lovely little Hippocampus's which were designed by Adriana the Fierce.

The Final Scroll was completed before the 2023 Coronation of Afshin and Yasmin on 4/1/23 . Caterina de Paulo, "Shannon Hamilton" - Puffin did the calligraphy and actually attended Coronation so it was hand delivered. The receipient " Lady Sonya Flicker" (Sonya Gross) Patches fell in love with the Scroll. It was based on Image #53 of the Jewel Book of the Duchess Anna of Bavaria. I am proud of my first Illumination. Now to teach myself Calligraphy.
History: this unique manuscript was commissioned in 1552 by Duke Albreacht V of Bavaria. The manuscript is an inventory of the jewelry owned by the duke and his wife, Duchess Anna, a member of the Habsburg dynasty and a daughter of the Emperor Ferdinand I.
Perg with black ink and guoache . This was done on her likes so the historical reference is not applicable for this scroll.
FOR REFERENCE:
Perg with gouache paints and Micron's and calligraphy ink for the Calligraphy (yep - need to work on Calligraphy). Flat backed pearl cabachons.
Award of the Silver Wings - Signy Jarnadottir
Order of the Silver Hawk- Robert Leftehande
Sir Roland Wodeman
One Kingdom Scroll which I can add when it is delivered
Line Art - Mistress Eleanor of Gray
This scroll was not completed but was still given as we had just went through Hurricane Helene in WNC. I did reach out and tell Jane that I would be happy to complete it.
