QUALITY STANDARD REFLECTIONS
Quality Standard 1: Teachers demonstrate mastery of and pedagogical expertise in the content they teach.
The elementary teacher is an expert in literacy and mathematics and is knowledgeable in all other content that s/ he teachers (e.g., science, social studies, arts, physical education, or world languages). The secondary teacher has knowledge of literacy and mathematics and is an expert in his or her content endorsement area(s).
• Element A: Teachers provide instruction that is aligned with the Colorado Academic Standards, their District’s organized plan of instruction, and the individual needs of their students.
• Element B: Teachers develop and implement lessons that connect to a variety of content areas/disciplines and emphasize literacy and mathematical practices.
• Element C: Teachers demonstrate knowledge of the content, central concepts, inquiry, appropriate evidence-based instructional practices, and specialized characteristics of the disciplines being taught.
Level: Developing
I see myself at the developing level for content knowledge and pedagogy. I feel confident in my understanding of art concepts like value, composition, and printmaking, and I’ve been able to translate that into clear instruction. For example, during our linocut project, I walked students step-by-step through carving and printing while explaining why each step matters, not just how to do it. This standard has pushed me to think more about how I teach, not just what I know. I’ve realized that breaking things down, modeling, and giving visual examples makes a huge difference. For students, this has helped build confidence, they’re more willing to try things and take risks because they actually understand the process. My goal is to move toward Proficient by improving how I differentiate, especially for students at really different skill levels.
Quality Standard 2: Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population of students.
• Element A: Teachers foster a predictable learning environment characterized by acceptable student behavior and efficient use of time in which each student has a positive, nurturing relationship with caring adults and peers.
• Element B: Teachers demonstrate an awareness of, a commitment to, and a respect for multiple aspects of diversity, while working toward common goals as a community of learners.
• Element C: Teachers engage students as individuals, including those with diverse needs and interests, across a range of ability levels by adapting their teaching for the benefit of all students.
• Element D: Teachers work collaboratively with the families and/or significant adults for the benefit of students.
Level: Proficient
I believe I’m at the proficient level in creating a safe and inclusive classroom. I focus a lot on building relationships and making sure students feel comfortable sharing their ideas. During critiques and project work, I try to create a space where students respect each other and feel okay being creative and a little vulnerable. This standard has helped me realize how important the classroom environment is. Students won’t take risks in their art if they don’t feel safe. I’ve seen that students are more engaged, more open to feedback, and more willing to participate when they feel safe and comfortable in the classroom. My goal is to keep growing by bringing in more diverse artists and perspectives so more students can see themselves reflected in the work we do.
Quality Standard 3: Teachers plan and deliver effective instruction and create an environment that facilitates learning for their students.
• Element A: Teachers demonstrate knowledge about the ways in which learning takes place, including the levels of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of their students.
• Element B: Teachers use formal and informal methods to assess student learning, provide feedback, and use results to inform planning and instruction.
• Element C: Teachers integrate and utilize appropriate available technology to engage students in authentic learning experiences.
• Element D: Teachers establish and communicate high expectations and use processes to support the development of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Element E: Teachers provide students with opportunities to work in teams and develop leadership. • Element F: Teachers model and promote effective communication.
Level: Developing
I see myself as developing in planning and delivering instruction. I try to keep lessons structured but still creative. For example, during the linocut project, I structured the lesson by first demonstrating the full printing process step-by-step, including inking the brayer, applying even pressure, and carefully pulling the print. I also built in time for multiple prints so students could learn from mistakes and improve their results. This standard has helped me get better at pacing and thinking ahead about where students might struggle. For students, it means they have clearer direction and feel more successful because they can see their progress. My goal is to move toward proficiency by incorporating more student choice and making lessons more student-driven instead of always teacher-led.
Quality Standard 4: Teachers demonstrate professionalism through ethical conduct, reflection, and leadership.
• Element A: Teachers demonstrate high standards for professional conduct.
• Element B: Teachers link professional growth to their professional goals.
• Element C: Teachers respond to a complex, dynamic environment.
• Element D: Teachers demonstrate leadership in the school, the community, and the teaching profession.
Level: Proficient
I believe I’m at the proficient level in professionalism. I reflect a lot on my lessons, what worked, what didn’t, and how I can improve. I try to stay consistent and positive with students and take responsibility for the classroom environment. This standard has helped me grow by making reflection a regular habit instead of something I do once in a while. For students, it creates a more stable and respectful classroom where expectations are clear. My goal is to move toward accomplished by taking on more leadership, like sharing ideas with other teachers and collaborating more no matter the grade level I end up in.
