What Are Quarry Tiles?

Quarry tiles are a hard-wearing, fired clay tile, used in the UK since the Roman times for indoor and outdoor flooring. Quarry tile is made from a mixture of clay minerals and fired at high temperatures, similar to bricks, making them impervious to water and more robust than standard clay tiles. Quarry tile floors are mostly red. However, they are also available in other colours such as black and brown. They are a popular choice for high traffic areas like; kitchens, utility rooms, conservatories, hallways and outdoor patio areas.

Cleaning Quarry Tile Floors

With their water resistance and durability, quarry tile is a popular flooring for high traffic areas like kitchens. But like all floorings, they will get dirty. You can greatly extend the appearance of your quarry tile floors by following a simple quarry tile cleaning program.

You can help keep the tiles clean with a regular cleaning schedule.

  1. Remove dry soil using a vacuum cleaner, stopping grit scratching the floor when you start wet cleaning.

  2. Mop the floor with a clean mop and using a Ph Neutral cleaner.

  3. Ideally, remove the cleaning slurry with a wet vacuum. Otherwise, remove as much slurry as you can with your mop.

  4. Rinse the floor with clean water. Again, a wet vac will be more straightforward. Replace the rinse water when it becomes dirty.

  5. Dry the floor with old towels, to help dry the floor.

If you are deep cleaning the floor, replace the Ph neutral cleaner with a good quality degreasing cleaner. Kitchen cleaners are ideal because they contain a range of cleaners. You may need to use a deck scrub to help remove ingrained soil from high traffic areas. Deep cleaning clay tiles is hard work, requiring plenty of elbow grease. Quarry floors are often hidden under carpet or other floorings, leaving glue and other residues. Restoring these floors needs an experienced professional to avoid damaging the floor.

Professional Restoration

Just like daily cleaning, we start by removing dry soil. We have a range of chemicals to treat different surface residues. Our treatments need between 10 and 30 minutes to penetrate the surface residues and soils. We use rotary scrubbing machines and wet vacuum cleaners to remove the slurry. Then we give the floors a good rinse, taking care not to over-wet the floor. Once the floor is clean and dry, we can inspect for broken tiles and damaged grout, undertaking repairs where necessary. The final stage of restoration is sealing. We have a range of sealers, to suit most floors. We will suggest the most appropriate sealer for your particular floor. Please remember that most sealers will start to degrade after 2-3 years (depending on usage and cleaning products used) so for regular cleaning use a sealer friendly cleaning product.

Cleaning Issues With Quarry Tiles

Many quarry tile floors were laid in Victorian and Edwardian times which can lead to a number of issues when cleaning and restoring.

They may have been covered by lino like the floor above, carpet, paint, floor coverings and adhesives that can permanently stain the tile surface.

Some floors can suffer years of efflorescence activity and the efflorescence can become calcified into the tile body.

Original grout can be so deeply ingrained with oil and soils that the only options are; accept it, re-grout or re-colour.

Both re-grouting and re-coloring have their own issues.

When re-grouting, all the old grout has to be removed without damaging the original tile. This can be a costly process and should only be carried out by a professional. Grout colouring involves applying an epoxy-based coloured seal to the surface of the grout. This can be a problem with old oily grout in kitchens. The oil in the grout can prevent the epoxy from sticking to the surface of the grout and over time it may flake off. Each installation must be assessed on its own merits. With our extensive experience in restoring and cleaning quarry tiles , we can show you exactly what can be done to transform your floor.
