In order to take a break from ‘business as usual’, AAGS invites scholars working within international relations and global studies, in addition to interested scholars from outside these fields, to submit abstracts addressing contemporary issues or theory through the use of non-orthodox concepts. This year we are proud to hold our annual conference at Chiang Mai University in Northern Thailand.

Established in 2006, the AAGS conference is a forum for the open exchange of ideas and spirited debate. The purpose of the selection process is not to maximize income by admitting as many presenters as possible, but to ensure a high quality, small-scale gathering of sincere discussants.

With this in mind, applicants are asked not simply to repackage their usual line of research in order to make it through the submission process, but to take an exploratory stroll outside (or at least pushing) the bounds of their formal field of expertise.

The following table gives, for the purpose of illustration, examples of how novel concepts might be used to address established theory or contemporary issues. AAGS also welcomes a reconsideration of ‘oldies but goodies’, from Sun Tzu to Thucydides to Hobbes to Machiavelli.

Applicants are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words explaining: i) The concept in question; ii) The theory/issue to which it is to be applied; and iii) A summary of potential contribution to the field.
Attendees may be invited to contribute a paper to a special edition of the Asia Journal of Global Studies, or to an edited volume in book form. We look forward to seeing you in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai!
The AAGS conference organizing committee invites paper proposals in line with the conference aims.. Proposals should be between 150 to 200 words and include the paper's title and the author's name, affiliation, and contact information. A bio of 100 to 125 words describing the author's background,
accomplishments and research interests should also accompany the proposal. Both proposals and bios should be written following the guidelines on the templates provided at:

and sent to us. Applications should then be submitted as MS Word email attachments or Google Documents to
conferencechair@aags.org.
Documents not using the templates or not following the specified format will not be accepted.
Please note that we can offer no travel support or funding to participants. Thus, please only submit a proposal if you are certain you
will have your own financial means to attend the conference.

About Chiang Mai University:
Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University, Thailand
This Faculty was formally established on 24th December 2005. It was created from the Department of
Political Science, which was originally part of the Faculty of Social Sciences - one of the first four faculties
that formed Chiang Mai University in 1965. This faculty has a long and rich history of producing top
scholarship in the field of political science, as well as leaders for the country. After 50 years, our 7,000
graduates have served key domestic and international organizations in various capacities. They have
been instrumental in leading change for public and private sectors, political organizations, as well as
development around the country. Alumni have served as Prime Minister, Minister, Permanent Secretary,
Provincial Governor, Mayor, leaders of political parties, parliamentarians, CEOs of companies, and
chairpersons of NGOs. In 2015, we celebrated the 50th Year Anniversary of "Political Science, CMU"; We
are looking forward to the next 50 years ahead!
