Any other points, pl give me so that i can add - I sent this to niharika when she was sad about maths re-exam. Maybe useful for gopika as well ? Positives of maths re-exam : 1. framework : std 10 maths is framework / basis on which std 11 and 12 maths are built. so by re-studying it, u are actually gaining (unlike, lets say, history, where std 9 topics have no connection with std 10) 2. proficiency : by studying again, u become even more proficient, which will help u crack later competitive exams 3. No need to study again with lot of effort : unlike other subjects, u dont need to study again. eg - if this has happened in physics, u wud need to once again read/mug up chapters etc prior to re-exam. in the case of maths, u already know concepts, so u just need to look up ur notes again 4. better performance : you said that u lost a few marks, and u must have been disappointed on not being able to score centum. This re-exam gives u another shot at the target ( i have always told u about my cousin kumar who got full marks in 10th maths, and i want you to do the same !) 5. peer tiredness : Your other friends might have much more tiredness, and u can do much better than them. Think of folks like aishani/akshu, who have no desire to do maths again in their life bcos they taking commerce gp. look at their fate ! 6. No tour plan : unlike many others, we have NOT done any trip/tour planning till now - so nothing gets affected So, be positive : you anyway cant do anything about it - so go for it nixxa ! 29/03/18, 11:18 - customerelakshya: rama writes such vulgar stuff : "oomban" - who is oombing here ? "okaytiyya" - u meant "okayriya" ? - who is okifying whom ? "ammukkan" - who is amukkifying it ? "kai naarayae jolliyae" - of course it will be kai jolli only, bcos he is a ondi-kattai. or did u mean - "kaai joli" ? 29/03/18, 12:13 - customerelakshya: nutritionist from sakra hospital called me : "we have tied up with healthify.me, an app which will help me control your eating habits and also assign a nutritionist for you" my ans : i have imported an XXX machine from the US. This is like a weighing machine in jewellery shop (glass box), of course fitted with sensors, cameras, front display panel etc. So, any food item i want to eat - i just load it in a customised plate and put it inside the box. it shows exactly the food composition and the calories. it also auto-records the data. u can pre-program the machine so that it allows u to eat 1500 calories per day. Beyond that limit, it sends out big alarm + SMS to your wife and doctor etc In case u decide to cheat and eat food without putting thru the m/c, even then it has a solution. the inventors sell an associated product called "cheek implant". This is actually a small chip embedded in your cheek. So if u eat any food item which has not gone thru the box in the first place, it will send a big beep and alarm/sms saying that u are cheating" So i neither need the app not a nutritionist. M'm - tech has come a long way. u are working in sakra - i am sure u know about robotic surgery ? remote surgery ? do u know that i am advising my daughters and their friends not to waste their time learning how to drive ?(bcos driverless cars are coming v soon) ? do u know that doctors themselves will become redundant in a few years, bcos all knowledge which they learn over 8-10 years will be even easier/relevant/better available online - google is also not keeping quiet on their search engine but making continuous improvements there do u know how alexa home/google mini are going to become even more powerful as we go along ? personal mobility is a big challenge for mankind. do u know that we are soon going to have jet backpacks where i can come to sakra from indiranagar in just 5 mins by flying with my backpack, rather than 1 hr in bangalore traffic.... I boarded the 6:50 pm train from Church Gate._ *When the train was about to leave Marine lines, a samosa vendor with an empty basket got on and took the seat next to me.* _As the compartment was sparsely occupied and my destination was still far away, I got into a conversation with him._ *Me:* _"Seems like you've sold all your samosas today."_ *Vendor (smiling):* _"Yes. By Almighty's grace, full sales today."_ *Me:* _"I really feel sorry for you people. Don't you get tired doing this tiresome job the whole day ?"_ *Vendor:* _"What to do, sir ? Only by selling samosas like this every day do we get a commission of 1 rupee for each samosa that we sell."_ *Me:* _"Oh, is that so ? How many samosas do you sell on an average each day ?"_ *Vendor:* _"On weekdays, we sell 4,000 to 5,000 samosas per day. On an average, we sell about 3,000 samosas a day."_ *I was speechless for a few seconds. The guy says he sells 3,000 samosas a day at 1 rupee each. He makes about 3,000 rupees daily, or 90,000 rupees a month.* *_That's Rs. 90,000 a month. OMG._* _I intensified my questioning and this time it was not for time pass._ *Me:* _"Do you make the samosas yourself ?"_ *Vendor:* _"No Sir. we get the samosas through a samosa manufacturer and we just sell them. After selling we give him the money and he gives us 1 rupee for each samosa that we sell."_ *I was unable to speak a single word more but the vendor continued...* _"But one thing, most of our earnings are spent on living expenses here at Bombay. Only with the remaining money are we able to take care of other business."_ *Me:* _"Other business ? What is that ?"_ *Vendor:* _"It is a land business. In 2007 I bought 1.5 acres in Palghar for 10 lakhs and I sold it a few months back for 80 lakhs. Now I have bought land in Umroli for 40 lakhs."_ *Me:* _"What did you do with the remaining amount ?"_ *Vendor:* _"Of the remaining amount, I have set aside 20 lakhs for my daughter's wedding. I have deposited the other 20 lakhs in the Bank, Post Office, Mutual Funds, Gold and bought Cash back Insurance."_ *Me:* _"How much schooling have you had ?"_ *Vendor:* _"I studied up to third standard. I stopped my studies when I was in the 4th standard, but I know how to read and write._ *Sir, there are many people like yourself, who dress well, wear a tie and suit, wear shoes, speak english fluently and work in air-conditioned rooms. But I don't think you guys earn as much as we do wearing dirty clothes and selling samosas."* _At this point, what could I reply. After all, I was talking to a True Indian Millionaire._ *The train chugged into Khar station and the samosa vendor got up from his seat.* *Vendor:* _"Sir, this is my station, have a good day."_ *Me:* _"Take care."_ *The questions at the back of my mind.* _(1) Does the manufacturer pay GST ? (There are more than 10 samosa vendors on the train)_ *(2) Am I a fool, linking my Aadhar card, Pan card, Bank account etc and paying Income Tax by way of deduction at source, buying Car on loan, House on loan, Bike on loan, TVs with emi, Apple phone with emi. Here, will tell about process aspects of my tcs10k run. Before race : Only 7 days of practice instead of 30 days. Rested fully 2 days before race day. The previus evening, arranged shirt with BIB attachment, my vaseline gel, other things On race day before leaving home : Got up at 4.15 am, Put on Rs 300-worth shoes (provogue), gel under-thigh and nipple areas, scissor with newspaper and cellotape, small plastic bottle with energiser mixed with water (300 ml water). Had half of mango lassi, took purse and mobile. With force, did some stools so that less weight inside body. also drained every bit of urine from body Reached ubcity parking by 450 am. after parking scooter, used the cellotape/paper to wrap my scooter key inside scooter on the side (so that i dont keep anything in my pocket when running) Huge crowd gathered by then. looking at people - some with company tshirt(accenture, pwc, kpmg etc),some for causes(isha vidya), some for green bengaluru, 1 person with tshirt saying "i want to prove to you hemant that i can also run". So we cross road at coffee day lounge ub city and try to get into kanteerava stadium. crowd is swelling, jostling. bottleneck at the gate because metal detector and tag verification. so finally by 525 or so, inside stadium. i can see huge crowd on the track, walking towards start line. shows 5.40 on the huge clock. RJ/VJ making some noise, mary pierce (brand ambassador) talking and motivating, RJ saying "go, go, go, run, run, run"). by this time, i finish the 300ml energiser water which i am carrying in pocket, dump the bottle in a dustbin (since i am supposed to have it 30 min before run), by the time i reach the start line it is 550 am approx. people start running from this point, so can finally stretch my legs. still lot of crowd, and lot of junta in front, behind, by side So, i start at my steady pace of about 9kmph, elevation to kasturba road and then keep running. Now, i pant all the time with deep breath, so amid all the din, no problem making so much noise. bystanders saying "go, go", kannada yellow drums brigade playing drums, some loudspeaker blaring hindi song ("swag se karenge sabka swagat") and so on. cross ashok nagar police station and into mg road. road wet from yesterday rain. keep on running, though pace slightly slowed down. see the 2 km mark soon. want to stop, but with an even slower pace i continue. somehow reach the 3 km mark. nearby, i grab the bisleri water and start walking for 50-100 m. then again start, slow slow running towards 4 km mark (some confusion in marking since they showed 3km point in 2 places). after cross 4km, again grabbed water, then stopped at 2-3 places alongwith slow run till reaching 6km. another water stop, then walked for 300-400 km. as runner, i can tell that 6-7 km is hardest (if u doing 10K). if u doing 21-K(13-15 km is hardest) - which means 75th percent is the hardest. Somehow reach 7km. Meanwhile, what is happening around me : people enjoying themselves, talking on mobile, many people just walking, even doing selfie when running. many running with friends. there is the 85 minute bus which i crossed ( a lady), i also crossed the 80-min bus. this lady is shouting - get going, come on, come on, lift ur feet etc. when i had crossed the 5km mark, some girls on sidewalk did special dance (this was at anil kumble circle), lots of police deployment, many organisers too, can hear some ambulance sound in background, someone shouting "medical emergency". in short, lot of activity, lot of noise, lot of chaos, lots and lots of people of all shapes and sizes. many many women showing bare white thighs. so one favourite technique of mine (which i use many times to make me forget pain of running) - i follow a nice thigh going in front of me, focus on it, and try to distract my mind. After 7 km - things slowed down even more. took some 5 breaks and 5 runs just in that 1 km till reach 8 km at entry to cubbon park thru general post office). From 8 km, much of my run effort is a haze. i walked, i ran a bit, again walked, again ran etc.i had planned to accelerate once i cross 9,and dash to the finish. it was not to be. i slightly increased speed after 9, but somehow could not muster same energy like my 2017-run towards the finish. At the finish, there was a huge crowd which had accumulated even before the finish line, i was not letting us go and reach the finish mark (the black metal strip on the floor where the rfid sensor identifies u) - so i think i wud have wasted 30-60 sec reaching this sensor which was just 4-5 feet away, thanks to the overflowing junta. i finished when the clock showed some 1.34 mins, so i knew in my mind that my timing cud have been around 1.15. Anyway, crowd was huge even after finish line (worse than even thirupathi queue), with sweaty bodies all over u, with irritating selfie-taker in the midst of all this, with yapping achievers excitedly informing their girlfriend/family etc, with an over-enthu guy asking u to take a snap of him (i took 2 for 2 people). time now must have been 7am. By the time i reached the main ground, it was 730 am-the volini recovery zone was on right. as the queue passed thru a point, i got my medal in hand, then an ORSL bottle, then followed directions to reach breakfast place - kesari, upma, chutney and rava idli. did not like it one bit, so wasted half of my b'fast (not very typical of me). so out of venue by 805 am, on the road by 815, reached home at 830 am, bathed, and myself/n1 left for her theory music exam at 915 am this time, not too much pain on leg, did not need to sit anywhere after my run. only regret was - i did not run fast enough to beat my previous year record. my extra weight was a big impediment i think. i will seriously rethink about enrolling for next year tcs10k. though i love the energy and the spirit, the crowd is too much and it has put me off this time - one cannot even run freely. So burst A for 3 km. Bursts B,C,D,E,F progressively shorter - 1 km long and smaller. 4-5 times water breaks 31/05/18, 20:28 - customerelakshya: *harisa - v v v v v v sorry to have u missed ur birthday. machan - hope u had a great day. wish u a fantastic and HEALTHY year ahead, da. take* 01/06/18, 14:09 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: In bangalore tomorrow, please let know if we meet tomorrow evening for hightea 01/06/18, 15:47 - customerelakshya: welcome to b'lore - lets do this every single time when we meet : sats close friends meeting formula philosophy plan get-together optimise optimisation optimization theory --------------------- as logistics expert (and with the help of moga the maths guru) - i want u to draw up a few constraints equations and draw up an optimisation model with 2 variables for each individual (sats, rama, harisa, sundy) : A - their locations during the day B-their most convenient times during the day Eg : Sats Location = Static = Saibaba Temple (from 8-8 pm) Let conveniences be in scale of 1-10, 10 being most comfy, 3 and below be impossible Sats Conveniences : 8-10 am : 10, 10-12 noon : 9, 12-2 : 8, 2-4:7, 4-6: 4, 6-8pm - 5, 8-10 pm:8 Ramana Location = where his work takes him across blr thru the day Conveniences : Based on his meetings ------------ So pl propose the venue/time based on the constraint model ( ie least distance travel by person, most comfy time of person) Of course we can complicate the model even more - eg give more weightage to raman bcos he is coming all the way from mumbai. Another eg : give less weightage to sats bcos he is the only vetti among all . Another eg : give more weightage to sundar bcos he has to travel by expensive self-drive car rather than scooter or rama's company car But hope u got the drift ! 01/06/18, 17:21 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: Machan are yoi by any chance from iim 01/06/18, 17:21 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: Pun intented 01/06/18, 17:33 - customerelakshya: *pl connect with others based on the methodology that i have explained above, and inform me the time/venue for tomorrow's meeting. i am looking forward to meeting you to sing to u LIVE my aalaporan song (am sure u or the others wud not have listened to it on sharms whatsapp* 01/06/18, 17:46 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: Iam not in town tomorrow 01/06/18, 18:11 - customerelakshya: - harisa - pl send me vacation photos (wherever u going for bday celebrations tomorrow) -rama - i will meet ONLY if sundy joins us - so work on him 01/06/18, 21:37 - customerelakshya: so sundakka-where are we meeting raman? u did not come for chennai function, so u obliged to come pay respects to him 02/06/18, 10:16 - customerelakshya: ramakka - any update ? machan - my daughter b'day tomrow so i need to go with family for some shopping. so evening looks tight - inform me once u get confirmation from sundy 02/06/18, 12:50 - customerelakshya: raman - not heard fm u 02/06/18, 16:24 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:03 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:08 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: <Media omitted> 02/06/18, 18:28 - customerelakshya: As u guys know, i am a very knowledgeable person (in the field of aanmeegam). We then left for bday lunch - original choice truffles was crowded, so went to taco bell - it has mexican food - chalupas, nachos and burritos. chapathi with peas inside or some rice inside. some pizza with topping, rice bowl with paneer, pepsi in glass which can be refilled any number of times etc. So lunch expense - Rs 908+121. n0 (n0 means both n1 and n2) wanted dessert so went to "cold stone" (after max on chm rd) - one large cup some concoction of cheese icecream (Rs 280+tax) back home by 330, 1 hr sleep. 5 pm her friend came from domlur (amulya) to give her a surprise - she had baked a cake at home and came with her mom. n1 and n2 then left at 530 to my mom house (gr maithri apts). amma took them by auto to temple in thippasandra, then they had chaat at karthik sweets, then back home by 8pm (myself and rajani had to go for a bday party of rajani cousin son at jayanagar, so we went separately). so me and rajani returned by 945 pm, family talk time for sometime - and bday is done with ! 04/06/18, 10:40 - customerelakshya: txs for message. my cousin (rashmi) is relocating to sydney on june 10. her husband, who was with oracle-blr, did a 1-yr course in data analytics in sydney univ, and has got a job there itself, alongwith 5 year family visa 05/06/18, 18:28 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: Please donot forward such stupid message?? 05/06/18, 18:52 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: Nice story, is it credible? 05/06/18, 18:54 - feb18-kg raman-raman kg - mumbai-mahindra: Nice write up txs for thr update 06/06/18, 10:17 - customerelakshya: ramakka - raq-01 - why did u not meet us on saturday, or call, or message? no communication from ur side at all? raq-02- why no comment on my "aalaporan" song ? Sathish Narayanan Elakshya Sathish Narayanan Elakshya · Add Credential Answered 5m ago I am originally from TN and the person’s name we are talking about is Mr Narendra Modi, our respected PM. Now, this person is not a foreign person, but an Indian, just like me. However, the language he prefers to normally speak in, is foreign to TN ( Hindi). But that is another matter, and for another discussion. His surname, pronounced in most parts of the country as “Modhi” ( have added a “h” only to point out that it is pronounced similar to Khadi) , means “to knock/dash at ”, “to confront”, etc, in Thamizh. More often that not, it is used in an aggressive conversation : Eg : Modi parkalaam vaa (meaning : lets fight it out, between you and me, to the finish). Perhaps that’s the reason Thamizhs have politely and respectfully resorted to mispronouncing his surname, making it “MoDi” ( similar to “Daddy” or the Hindi “Gaadi”). You could view some of the Thamizh news channels to see what i mean. When the average northerner is unable to correctly pronounce the “zha” retroflex in Thamizh, I see no reason why Thamizhs should not be allowed to pronounce Hindi as “Gindi” (“h” is NOT a core Thamizh consonaut). And pronouncing as “MoDi” should be perfectly fine and acceptable for all! 09/06/18, 20:58 - sep17-frd-ops-mgr-harish pv-close-friend-fz: Why they say that Gandhi family considers india their personal property: *Sports/Tournaments/Trophies* : 1. Besides, the first leg (5 km) was a bit faster than earlier. When i started about 25 days back, i could barely manage 2 km continous. Though i ended up doing 5K and even 7K then itself, i had to make do with a few walk breaks. Over the last fortnite, i have been able to do upto 7K conti. And today was the topping. And to top the topping, am not feeling too worn out either. So the plan is to slowly keep on enhancing this CONTI target, and somehow make it to about 20-22 km (from the current 9K limit). This will ensure that i am somehow able to complete my full marathon, which i will do with 22 km conti and 20 km of brisk walk(hopefully) - So i have another 125 days i suppose. Meantime, i need your support and encouragement, and PUSH. I cannot afford to slip back to previous levels. once the momentum is lost, i again have to painfully go thru the whole process (from the 2 km fitness level) , in which case i might be too late for my 21 Oct 2018 peaking (my marathon date) 19/06/18, 10:53 - a18-sundar natarajan mobile -sundy - friend - peenya-airport-bial-kaatu: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/romelu-lukaku-ive-got-some-things-to-say 19/06/18, 10:54 - a18-sundar natarajan mobile -sundy - friend - peenya-airport-bial-kaatu: take 5 mins off to read this...its a must read 19/06/18, 10:54 - customerelakshya: *Since all of you seem to be crazy about football, putting this in saramosuha* Argentine superstar Lionel Messi once said: "In football... talent and elegance mean nothing without rigor and precision." It's a sentiment Goldman Sachs seems to have taken to heart when compiling its forecast for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which is set to kick off on June 14. The firm used machine learning to run 200,000 models, mining data on team and individual player attributes, to help forecast specific match scores. Goldman then simulated 1 million possible variations of the tournament in order to calculate the probability of advancement for each squad. The tournament bracket below shows how Goldman sees the World Cup unfolding. Note that the numbers next to each nation - which dictate whether they advance over their opponent - represent the predicted, unrounded number of goals scored in each possible iteration of the tournament, based on machine learning results applied to countless scenarios. Screen Shot 2018 06 11 at 8.35.24 AMGoldman Sachs "We are drawn to machine learning models because they can sift through a large number of possible explanatory variables to produce more accurate forecasts than conventional alternatives," a group of strategists from Goldman's international research team wrote in a client note. Here are the key takeaways from Goldman's data: Brazil is expected to win its sixth World Cup title, defeating Germany in the final by an unrounded score of 1.70 to 1.41 While France has better overall odds of lifting the trophy, its expected meeting with Brazil in the semi-finals has it falling short of the title match England is expected to make it to the quarter-final stage, where Goldman says they'll lose to Germany Spain and Argentina are forecast to underperform, both losing in the quarter-finals Russia isn't expected to make it out of the group stage at all, despite its role as tournament host Goldman sees Saudi Arabia as the surprising team that will advance out of the group stage, ahead of the host nation With all of that established, football (soccer) remains a highly unpredictable sport, with many more variables in play than even Goldman could assess. Which is why the authors of the report offer this disclaimer at the end: "We capture the stochastic nature of the tournament carefully using state-of-the-art statistical methods and we consider a lot of information in doing so," they said. "But the forecasts remain highly uncertain, even with the fanciest statistical techniques, simply because football is quite an unpredictable game. This is, of course, precisely why the World Cup will be so exciting to watch." 19/06/18, 10:56 - customerelakshya: Great one - watched and read all of them - I've Got Some Things to Say Romelu Lukaku BELGIUM JUN 17 2018 I remember the exact moment I knew we were broke. I can still picture my mum at the refrigerator and the look on her face. I was six years old, and I came home for lunch during our break at school. My mum had the same thing on the menu every single day: Bread and milk. When you’re a kid, you don’t even think about it. But I guess that’s what we could afford. Then this one day I came home, and I walked into the kitchen, and I saw my mum at the refrigerator with the box of milk, like normal. But this time she was mixing something in with it. She was shaking it all up, you know? I didn’t understand what was going on. Then she brought my lunch over to me, and she was smiling like everything was cool. But I realized right away what was going on. She was mixing water in with the milk. We didn’t have enough money to make it last the whole week. We were broke. Not just poor, but broke. My father had been a pro footballer, but he was at the end of his career and the money was all gone. The first thing to go was the cable TV. No more football. No more Match of the Day. No signal. Then I’d come home at night and the lights would be shut off. No electricity for two, three weeks at a time. Then I’d want to take a bath, and there would be no hot water. My mum would heat up a kettle on the stove, and I’d stand in the shower splashing the warm water on top of my head with a cup. There were even times when my mum had to “borrow” bread from the bakery down the street. The bakers knew me and my little brother, so they’d let her take a loaf of bread on Monday and pay them back on Friday. I knew we were struggling. But when she was mixing in water with the milk, I realized it was over, you know what I mean? This was our life. Sam Robles/The Players' Tribune I didn’t say a word. I didn’t want her to stress. I just ate my lunch. But I swear to God, I made a promise to myself that day. It was like somebody snapped their fingers and woke me up. I knew exactly what I had to do, and what I was going to do. I couldn’t see my mother living like that. Nah, nah, nah. I couldn’t have that. People in football love to talk about mental strength. Well, I’m the strongest dude you’re ever going to meet. Because I remember sitting in the dark with my brother and my mom, saying our prayers, and thinking, believing, knowing … it’s going to happen. I kept my promise to myself for a while. But then some days I’d come home from school and find my mum crying. So I finally told her one day, “Mum, it’s gonna change. You’ll see. I’m going to play football for Anderlecht, and it’s going to happen soon. We’ll be good. You won’t have to worry anymore.” I was six. I asked my father, “When can you start playing professional football?” He said, “Sixteen.” I said, “O.K., sixteen then.” It was going to happen. Period. Let me tell you something — every game I ever played was a Final. When I played in the park, it was a Final. When I played during break in kindergarten, it was a Final. I’m dead-ass serious. I used to try to tear the cover off the ball every time I shot it. Full power. We weren’t hitting R1, bro. No finesse shot. I didn’t have the new FIFA. I didn’t have a Playstation. I wasn’t playing around. I was trying to kill you. When I started growing taller, some of the teachers and the parents would be stressing me. I’ll never forget the first time I heard one of the adults say, “Hey, how old are you? What year were you born?” I’m like, What? Are you serious? When I was 11 years old, I was playing for the Lièrse youth team, and one of the parents from the other team literally tried to stop me from going on the pitch. He was like, “How old is this kid? Where is his I.D.? Where is he from?” I thought, Where am I from? What? I was born in Antwerp. I’m from Belgium. My dad wasn’t there, because he didn’t have a car to drive to my away games. I was all alone, and I had to stand up for myself. I went and got my I.D. from my bag and showed it to all the parents, and they were passing it around inspecting it, and I remember the blood just rushing through me … and I thought, “Oh, I’m gonna kill your son even more now. I was already going to kill him, but now I’m gonna destroy him. You’re gonna drive the boy home crying now.” I wanted to be the best footballer in Belgian history. That was my goal. Not good. Not great. The best. I played with so much anger, because of a lot of things … because of the rats running around in our apartment … because I couldn’t watch the Champions League … because of how the other parents used to look at me. I was on a mission. When I was 12, I scored 76 goals in 34 games. I scored them all wearing my dad’s shoes. Once our feet got to be the same size, we used to share. One day I called up my grandfather — my mum’s dad. He was one of the most important people in my life. He was my connection back to Congo, where my mum and dad are from. So I was on the phone with him one day, and I said, “Yeah, I’m doing really well. I scored 76 goals, and we won the league. The big teams are noticing me.” And usually, he always wanted to hear about my football. But this time it was strange. He said, “Yeah, Rom. Yeah, that’s great. But can you do me a favor?” I said, “Yeah, what is it?” He said, “Can you look after my daughter, please?” I remember being so confused. Like, what’s Grandad on about? I said, “Mum? Yeah, we’re cool. We’re O.K.” He said, “No, promise me. Can you promise me? Just look after my daughter. Just look after her for me, O.K.?” I said, “Yeah, Granddad. I got it. I promise you.” Five days later he passed away. And then I understood what he really meant. It makes me so sad to think about, because I just wish that he could have lived another four years to see me play for Anderlecht. To see that I kept my promise, you know? To see that everything was going to be O.K. I told my mum that I would make it at 16. I was late by 11 days. May 24, 2009. The playoff final. Anderlecht vs. Standard Liège. John Thys/AFP/Getty Images That was the craziest day of my life. But we have to back up for a minute. Because at the start of the season, I was barely playing for the Anderlecht U-19s. The coach had me coming off the bench. I’m like, “How the hell am I going to sign a pro contract on my 16th birthday if I’m still on the bench for the U-19s?” So I made a bet with our coach. I told him, “I’ll guarantee you something. If you actually play me, I’m going to score 25 goals by December.” He laughed. He literally laughed at me. I said, “Let’s make a bet then.” He said, “O.K., but if you don’t score 25 by December, you’re going to the bench.” I said, “Fine, but if I win, you’re going to clean all the minivans that take the players home from training.” He said, “O.K., it’s a deal.” I said, “And one more thing. You have to make pancakes for us every day.” He said, “O.K., fine.” That was the dumbest bet that man ever made. I had 25 by November. We were eating pancakes before Christmas, bro. Let that be a lesson. You don’t play around with a boy who’s hungry! I signed my pro contract with Anderlecht on my birthday, May 13. Went straight out and bought the new FIFA and a cable package. It was already the end of the season, so I was at home chilling. But the Belgian league was crazy that year, because Anderlecht and Standard Liege had finished tied on points. So there was a two-leg playoff to decide the title. During the first leg, I’m at home watching on TV like a fan. Then the day before the second leg, I get a phone call from the coach of the reserves. “Hello?” “Hello, Rom. What are you doing?” “About to go play football in the park.” “No, no, no, no, no. Pack your bags. Right now.” “What? What did I do?” “No, no, no. You need to get to the stadium right now. The first team wants you now.” “Yo …. What?! Me?!” “Yeah, you. Come now.” I literally sprinted into my dad’s bedroom and was like, “Yo! Get your ass up right now! We gotta go, man!” He’s like, “Huh? What? Go where?” I’m like, “ANDERLECHT, MAN.” I’ll never forget, I showed up to the stadium, and I like pretty much ran into the dressing room and the kitman said, “O.K., kid, what number do you want?” And I said, “Give me number 10.” The kitman said, “O.K., kid, what number do you want?” And I said, “Give me number 10.” Hahahaha! I don’t know
