Benefits of Volunteering
Operation Homefront Military Child of the Year Award
The Military Child of the Year Award reflects the positive impact that impressive young people have made on their military families, their schools, and their communities.
Submissions are now closed for the esteemed Operation Homefront 2026 Military Child of the Year® Awards, the nation’s premier recognition of the outstanding achievements of our military children. Submissions for Operation Homefront 2027 Military Child of the Year® Awards will open in October of 2026.
Child must be a legal military dependent, between the ages of 13 and 18, and available to travel to the Washington, DC area for the award presentation in April.
All Operation Homefront Military Child of the Year Award recipients will receive $10,000 each, a laptop computer, and other donated gifts. They also will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., and recognized at the April gala, during which senior leaders of each branch of service will present the awards.
Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS)
In order to receive any of the above Benefits of Volunteering, your hours must be tracked in the VMIS System. VMIS is for more than recording your hours. Positions have also been used when applying for jobs (additions to resumes) and to ensure both the volunteers and organizations are protected in case of injury, illness, or worse.
